Your team's 2003 draft

Ottawa Senators

29 - Patrick Eaves

A good pick at 29. Eaves scored 20 goals in his first year with the Sens, but wasn't given a big role this year due to depth issues. He'll be a top-6 winger, as he has great work-ethic and offensive instincts. However, he needs to work on his skating, and add some muscle.

67 - Igor Mirnov

A great 2nd round pick. Mirnov is an elite player in the RSL, who plays an up-and-down game. He can crash the net, or use his laser wrist shot. The Sens will desperately attempt to get him over to rookie camp, but are encountering the same old "Russian Prospects" hurdles. Elite RSL players have no real incentive to play in the AHL. If he comes over, he's got 2nd line wing potential.

100 - Philippe Seydoux

Was a decent pick, and showed pretty good potential playing for Kloten, and the national Swiss team. Fans wanted him to cross the ocean, but he never did. He's now playing in the FNL, and I'm quite sure the Sens don't even have his rights.

135 - Mattias Karlsson

Bust. Playing in the Swe-1.

142 - Tim Cook

Big, physical D-man who also plays wing for Michigan. He'll never make the NHL

166 - Sergei Gimayev

RSL for life.

291 - Brian Elliott

A steal! Eliott is the number 1 goaltending prospect in the Sens' system, and just finished up a dominant college career for Wisconsin. Look for him to be at LEAST a backup at the NHL level, after a couple of years in the AHL.

Summary: 1 NHL player with great potential. 2 probable future NHL players. The Sens did a decent job with the picks they had. Unfortunately they might have wasted a couple on Russians.

Sabres:

Thomas Vanek (rd 1, #5) - 40 goal scorer, league plus/minus leader in his second NHL season. Bonafide top-line winger at this point and a dynamic scoring threat whenever he's on the ice. Defensive game is improving.

Branislav Fabry (rd 2, #65) - Has been in training camp the last couple of seasons and reports suggest some skill and promise but hasn't been signed and needs to be this offseason. Odds don't look great.

Clarke MacArthur (rd 3, #74) - Rochester's leading scorer in the AHL this year. Successful offensive player everywhere he's been. Uneven tenure in 19 games this year for the Sabres. Will be in the fight for a roster spot come training camp.

Jan Hejda (rd 4, #106) - Overage European player who the Sabres never signed and ultimately traded to the Oilers for a 7th rounder. Ask Oil fans about him for more detail but he seems like he was a decent depth player for them this year.

Denis Ezhov (rd 4, #114) - Veteran of a few WJCs but hasn't seemed to make much headway on the Sabres depth chart and seems to be falling down it. Needs to be signed this summer, doesn't look likely.

Thomas Morrow (rd 5, #150) - Well, he's very tall. Incredibly unspectacular career at BU and almost certainly won't be signed this offseason.

Pavel Voroshnin (rd 6, #172) - Drafted out of the OHL, returned to Europe and disappeared off the map. For all I know, he just served me the sandwich I had for lunch.

Nathan Paetsch (rd 7, #202)
- Re-entry who couldn't come to a contract deal with the Caps as a former 2nd rounder. Good puck moving defenseman with a solid shot, a bit of chippiness. Undersized but plays hard, has dropped the gloves on a couple of occasions. Versatile, has played wing in the AHL and NHL.

Jeff Weber (rd 8, #235) - Goalie who seems like he played for half the OHL. Never signed, probably working the deli with Voroshnin.

Louis-Philippe Martin (rd 9, #266) - Never signed, I think he manages Jeff and Pavel at the deli.

Summary: When you have the 5th overall pick you can't afford to miss and they didn't. Vanek has been everything you could hope for. Beyond that Paetsch is an NHL-quality player, though maybe just a 3rd pair guy. MacArthur is on the fringe at this point. Hejda is in the NHL but if you draft an overager, he has to player in the league otherwise there's no point in making the pick. I'd give the class a B+ mostly for getting the Vanek pick right.

57 D John Doherty
91 L Martin Sagat
125 R Konstantin Volkov
158 C John Mitchell
220 C Jeremy Williams
237 C Shaun Landolt

Pat O`Sullivan was supposedly on the Leafs radar , but we weren't aggressive enough and we missed out .

Jeremy Williams may be a NHLer .

What happened to Doherty anyway? I know he was unhappy and left university, but it looks like his career took a huge nosedive after that and he's playing in the UHL or something now.

Crappenfest for the Leafs:

57 D John Doherty
91 L Martin Sagat
125 R Konstantin Volkov
158 C John Mitchell
220 C Jeremy Williams
237 C Shaun Landolt

Mitchell and Williams might turn into players someday, but I'm not holding my breath. Sagat is a Marlie, and that's probably as high as he'll get. Doherty is a bust, Volkov will probably stay in Russia, and Landolt is in the CHL.

At least we did better than Phoenix, right?

2003 for Atlanta........We should have picked Phanuf. I knew we were screwed when I got food poisoning on the way to Nashville to watch the draft. Thank U Tennessee for that lovely day.

That being said I was all for the corburn pick at the time. Just goes to show what a little bit more time does to a few prospects.

63rd overall David Liffiton - Was traded to the Rangers for 24 games of Matt Barnaby, he has played a total of 3 NHL games.

131. David Svagorovsky - Played this season for the Arizona Sundogs of the CHL

146. Mark McCutcheon - Still playing for Cornell, I'm not sure if the Avs have any interest in signing him.

163. Brad Richardson. - :yo:

204. Linus Videll - Late round flyer who rumour has it the Avs European scout wants to see in training camp this offseason.

288. David Jones - Power forward prospect, top 10 in the Hobey for last season, just got signed.

All in all it looks like the Avs got a couple of steals out of this one.

haha, i was wondering when someone would mention this. i try to block that year from my mind.

i was waiting for JOrts to respond with his usual rant filled with

:cry::cry:'s

and

:shakehead:shakehead's

capped off by a

"yeah but we have jessiman" :biglaugh::biglaugh::shakehead:cry:

Dawes looks to be a player, Baranka and Potter have legit shots... who knows we might get something out of it after all. Otherwise, truly brutal.

Flames

9 D Dion Phaneuf -Obviously awesome pick, although the teams picking Suter and Coburn ahead of Phaneuf did the work for us... (as I recall they were rated similarily at the time)
39 D Tim Ramholt -Played in Swiss League, sitting on the bench for 2 seasons which hurt development.. still has a chance at the NHL, but not yet.
97 L Ryan Donally - No idea. Maybe an AHL player
112 C Jamie Tardif - went unsigned by the Flames. Hasn't had success in AHL
143 F Greg Moore -Traded to NYR in Chris Simon deal.
173 C Tyler Johnson -No idea. nothing on hockeydb after WHL
206 R Thomas Bellemare - Not going to make the NHL
240 L Cam Cunning - Doing alright in AHL.. will need a lot to make it the next step
270 L Kevin Harvey - unlikely to make it to AHL..

All in all, we got one player, who is already one of our best.. so I guess that is a good thing. Did absolutely nothing after the first round though.

10 W Andrei Kostitsyn - painful in that Getzlaf, Parise, etc. were on the board but Kosty will be a full-time NHLer next year and could be a solid player.
40 C Cory Urquhart - brutal pick
61 C Maxim Lapierre - good pick, will be a contributor for a long time as a checker/pest who can chip in the odd goal
79 D Ryan O'Byrne - good start to his AHL career, I see him as a bottom pairing NHL defenseman
113 C Corey Locke - took the chance on the junior scoring sensation, looks to be a career AHLer
123 L Danny Stewart - ECHL/AHL fodder
177 G Christopher Heino-Lindberg - SEL for life
188 D Mark Flood - didn't bother signing him
217 Oskari Korpikari - unlikely to ever make it over
241 L Jimmy Bonneau - goon show
271 G Jaroslav Halak - great pick, should at least be an NHL backup. Amazing in the AHL and carried the Habs' playoff hopes for a while.

Overall - Making it out of a draft with four NHLers (as I see it) is doing very good, but you can't help but have a sour taste picking Kosty over some studs. Plus the Urquhart pick was brutal.

Minnesota:

1. (20) Brent Burns:

Until this year this was a question mark, but now it looks right in line with the other good picks in this area. Great pick by the Wild.

2. (56) Patrick O'Sullivan:

We'll see if he lives up to the hype, but this was a 2nd round steal any way you look at it.

3. (78) Danny Irmen:

Another great pick for the third round. Could be playing for the Wild next season.

5. (157) Marcin Kolusz
6. (187) Miroslav Kopriva
7. (207) Grigory Misharin
7. (219) Adam Courchaine

Only Kopriva really was thought to have a shot, but he didn't pan out along with the others. No big deal considering how this is the norm in these rounds. Overall 2003 was a fine draft for the Wild.

Braydon Coburn D 1 (8) Portland (WHL)
James Sharrow D 4 (110) Halifax (QMJHL)
Guillame Desbiens RW 4 (116) Rouyn Nor. (QMJHL)
Michael Vannelli D 4 (136) Sioux Falls (USHL)
Brett Sterling LW 5 (145) Col. Coll. (WCHA)
Mike Hamilton F 6 (175) Merritt (BCHL)
Denis Loginov C 7 (203) Kazan (Russia)
Tobias Enstrom D 8 (239) Modo (Sweden)
Rylan Kaip F 9 (269) Notre Dame (SJHL)

Corburn- traded to Philly but was in BH's dog house when he was here. his development wasnt that good and many were happy to see him go though he appears to have stepped it up in Philly.

Sharrow- ECHL has looked good at times and looked like a career ECHL'r might make it to the AHL next year because ATL needs young dmen.

Desbiens- May make the NHL as a 4th liner as early as next year.

Vannelli- Haven't heard much so that cant be good but he might make the AHL still has a few years left in college.

Sterling- STEAL!!!! This kid could be a 30+ goal scorer in the NHL. He goes to the net and works hard. Won the AHL rookie of the year award and led all rookies in scoring and was in the top for league scoring. At worst a 3rd liner that scores 15 to 20 a year.

Hamilton- Average NCAA player, could make the 4th line as a pk specialist. Most likely a few seasons in the AHL and done.

Loginov- Has skill with good hands plays for Kazan prolly will never make it to america.

Enstrom- Highly skilled offensive defense man small though. Will be given a chance to make the team this year.

Kaip- 4th line pest at best prolly will never make it to the AHL

Erikkson has a hance although I am not as sold on him as some. Polak looks like an AHLer. The crombeen over O'Sully thing has been beat to death. Nickerson is agoon . Of the others , the goalie has ashot at being brought over. Bleh.

We feel that Getzlaf is a better player on a team that has two Norris d-man and a steady goalie. Also, we feel that it is too early to write Carter off.

I am not sure if Perry is better then M.Richards. Statistically maybe but Richards brings d-sive game and leadership. Richards scored almost the same # points playing 20 less games then last season.

Not to make any excuses but your team is going to cup finals and our teams finished last.

I never said I was an Anaheim fan, but I have watched Getzlaff and Perry through the playoffs. To me they are very impressive players. I probably didn't think so much of them before I studied 'em close up for a time. I guess the supporting cast thing has some merit , though.

yeah other than Dion the draft was pretty weak for the Flames IMO... the '04 and '05 drafts for the flames though were fantastic

Ah, yes, the 2003 draft. One of my favorites.

1A-Milan Michalek-
1B-Steve Bernier-

2A-Josh Hennessy-
2B-Matt Carle-
7A-Jonathan Tremblay- Not a lot of upside for Tremblay. He's a great fighter, but that's about it. He's had nearly no offensive production at any level and essentially all other aspects of his game need work.

7B-Joe Pavelski-

7C-KAI HOSPELT-

I don't know anything about the rest of the Sharks picks, but 2003 was a very good draft overall for the Sharks.

Understatement of the year;) (in the above mentioned in bold).

You guys were #1 for drafting that year...what you guys drafted (talent) that year is good enough for at least 2 Drafts!!

They should give some kind of award (at least 3-4 years after each draft?!!!:amazed:) to the scouts who chose these Sharks players (prospects at the time). No?!!

Sterling and Enstrom are going to be the big names out of this draft for the Thrashers.

Sterling is pretty much penciled in the lineup for next year, and Enstrom has a great shot of making the team IF he wants to come over from Europe next year.

Vancouver had a fantastically horrible draft. The next year was so much better and incidentally, it was the first one not run by Burke.

Apart from Kesler, there is nobody of note and many (Danielsson, Nolan, Bernier) have already busted.

Interesting, how has Burke's drafts in Aneheim been? Knowledgeable Duck's fans want to chime in?

Shy.

One of the best drafts in a long time and this is what the leafs end up with. We better hope williaams turns out to be a 30 goal scorer or this is the dirtiest collection of players to ever be drafted. Someone working for the leafs had to know that this draft was going to be a powerhouse but noone could get a deal done to move the leafs at least up into the top two rounds of this draft

This draft defines the Leafs.....choices traded away for a shot at Lord Stanley....only problem was that shot only really existed in the minds of Leaf fans and management.
How would you like being a Leaf scout that year knowing your first pick was in the fifties?
Congrats to the Ducks for Getzlaf and Perry so late.

Barry Trapp said:

"It will be exciting to draft someone so high and turn them over for development," Trapp said as scouts and management gathered in Bytown. "But it wasn't a case of being frustrated before. Deals were made to try and win Stanley Cups and it's good we had those (draft pick and youth) resources to trade. Scouts realize that it's part of the business."

http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Draft/2005/07/29/1152363-sun.html

In short, because the 2001 and 2002 drafts were so good.
