You could flip that for something if you want. I don't think it's a bad deal.

I still don't see why he can't be that guy. He's great defensively.
I don’t think he’s good enough at moving pucks and making plays and he brings absolutely nothing offensively.

Please don't play Gilles tomorrowo_O
If we do and he bombs there will at least be a couple people saying we just didn’t have it in the second half of the back to back or Sharangovich just wasn’t back checking tonight like he did last night and Jack Hughes is just showing his defensive deficiencies again. And we just really blew our load last night and it was too difficult to replicate that for a second night in a row.

No doubt about it.

Daws looks like a legit NHL goalie so far. And our offense looks unreal. Still need to work on the D. If we can keep this up going into the trade deadline I wouldn’t trade for a forward or a D. We have an exciting young group of forwards that is absolutely tearing it up right now. Our top 4 D are good other than maybe lacking a true top pairing LD. Think some of our defensive struggles come from our forwards. Look for a capable backup goalie to split the rest of the season with Daws but don’t break the bank for that if he can keep this up over the next couple weeks.

Trade Subban, and Vesey if we can get some value for them. I would like to see Okhotiuk get an audition and maybe Walsh if we trade Subban which I’m not sure we will.
I’m honestly not sure what we should do with Smith at this point but he’s been really bad this season and I’m losing hope for him more and more every week.
So two good games lately where we score a lot of goals against terrible goaltending and we are “unreal”…. I think you may need to sit down. If you haven’t noticed or checked the standings , we are once agjan out of the playoffs and one of the worst teams in the league…Scoring some goals against a poor goaltending performance against a team that travelled across the continent and played on the second half of a back to back is not an indication of us being “unreal”. You wouldn’t trade for a forward or D at the deadline ? Why? If a deal is there for a player that is an improvement and has term … why wouldn’t we ? I don’t get it . I am sorry but Im grumpy that anyone can say we or “unreal” after playing two ok games out of about 45 games. Especially after suffering through yet another season of sucking and almost a decade of missing the playoffs. Sorry but we need to make moves( forwards especially) . We are nowhere near staying pat.Defence is in way better spot than our forwards.

When has anyone defended Gilles? I must miss it because I haven’t seen anyone say he has not been garbage.

When has anyone defended Giles ? Man it’s unreal how obsessed you are with the goaltending. We get it . We agree . We suck because our goaltending has been shit. Amidst other things but yes a large part is goaltending.
Yes, there are some people that defended him and constantly rationalize and try to deflect the blame on other things.

When I’m counting FORTY percent of the goals on him as ones he should have had it’s a problem.

And there’s really not a whole lot of goalies that I’m count 40% of their goals stoppable. The ones that do I do have usually played even fewer games than shitty Gillies has.

And yes, I am absolutely and utterly OBSESSED with goaltending. That’s a flag I’ve waved for probably 30 years.

But we all know we got him for future considerations ... at this point I'm considering suing the St. Louis Blues!!!

No way bro, if he only played there the whole year he’d be better there because they play way better there.

It’s not like you see Jordan Binnington playing over there with a .904% save percentage do you?

38 SA is a lot, but playing most of the game with a comfortable lead is less taxing than playing a low scoring tight game and having to face that many. There were some great saves, but it seemed like there a lot easy ones too. Waiting for a heat map.

Whoever starts tomorrow should be pulled if they look bad early, even if it's only one or two goals, unless the rest of the team plays poorly in front of Gillies, then might as well not subject Daws to that, unless it gets the team to play better after the change. If not, reinsert Gillies.

The later saves were mostly garbage time score effects.

The important saves were when it was still close, especially at 3-1.

There’s 2 saves in particular that really stick out. First one was early on against Hoglander. The other was in the small gap between Podkolzin and Boqvist. We’re likely looking at a different game if it’s 3-2 there rather than 4-1 (although Halak might’ve gave it away anyway).

So what? His job is to play defense.
His job is to help the team win hockey games. He is really good at playing defence which is his bread and butter and certainly helps the team win. He doesn’t do other stuff well enough to be a top pairing defensemen on a contending team IMO. I get that he’s good at playing defence and that’s his role. There’s a lot of other important aspects to winning a hockey game and as a player he doesn’t do other things well enough to be a top pair defensemen on a contending team. It’s that simple.

Nobody here defends him - we just point out that when you give up ~40 shots a night against AHL goaltenders; many of them high quality odd man rushes or wide open looks, you aren't a playoff team to begin with.

Gillies has in fact not even faced 40 shots in a game this year. His season high was 39 shots faced in a 3-2 OT loss in his only game with St. Louis this season.

His season high with us is 37 against LA and he only allowed 3 goals that game.

I think you need to reread that. I said that our offense has been unreal which it has. We have been one of the top offensive teams in the league lately.

FYI, since Christmas the devils have 82 goals in 23 games which is 3.6 goals per game. They have 43 in the last 10 which is 4.3 per game.

We are 14th in the league in goals for and goals for per game and more than half of our goals have come in the 23 games since Christmas and we were also missing our best forward and best offensive defensemen for 29 games each. Our offense has been one of the best in the league lately.
We were producing at a 2.6 goals per game rate in the 30 games before Christmas btw.

He could be a top pair d on a contending team if a really good puck mover like Hamilton is his partner and have fwds like Hughes who often move the puck up ice.

That said I agree with your general point. I think Sieg's is a really good 2nd pair defensive first d-man.
