Your country's team--if the Olympics were held today

We're halfway between Olympic cycles--2 years removed from Vancouver and 2 years until Sochi. Obviously there would be some turnover, if you were to pick your country's Olympic team if the tournament were held TODAY (note: not projecting the 2014, but rather if it were held right now), who would and wouldn't make it? Pick any country you like, I'm American so naturally I'll do Team USA.

GOALIES: I'd stick with Quick, Miller, and Thomas, although this time Thomas would be the starter. Jimmy Howard has done everything he can to make this team, and it's so hard to leave him off. But Thomas is the world's best goalie right now, Miller is the reigning tournament MVP, and Quick is equal to Howard but has been in the NHL a little longer.

DEFENSEMEN: Here's where the real turnover begins. We've had a few D-men step up since 2010 that are better than some guys that played in 2010. Rafalski retired, so he has to be replaced. I'd ax Erik Johnson (been pretty average since 2010, change of scenery hasn't helped much, turned down the Worlds last year), Tim Gleason (to be fair, he had a pretty good Olympic tournament, but is he really one of our best 7?), and Brooks Orpik (same there, is he really one of our 7 best?) I'd replace them with Keith Yandle, Dustin Byfuglien, Paul Martin (who should have been there in the first place but for injury), and Alex Goligoski. I wonder if maybe John Carlson or Cam Fowler should be in the running this soon in their careers.

FORWARDS: This is where is gets disappointing. Because so few young American forwards have really stepped up their game since 2010, the guys we took in 2010 are largely the guys I'd take today, even though some of them may not deserve it. Guys like Okposo, Wheeler, Stafford, Gaustad, Booth...all are guys you'd hoped would be a lot farther along at this point in their career. Obviously you have to replace the retired Drury, and Langenbrunner has no shot anymore. I'd leave Malone at home and probably Stastny too (that one hurts a little, but his game has really fallen off since Vancouver). In their place I'd take VanRiemsdyk, Connolly, Patchioretty, and I hate to say it since he's truly Canadian...but Pomminville. He's having an amazing season and he's worn the USA sweater in the past. Really hard to leave Oshie off, he's playing good hockey.

So about 2/3 of the guys in 2010 would probably be on my roster today, with most of the turnover being in the defense. Still a competitive and medal winning team, hopefully some good forwards (hello Colin Wilson) will evolve in the next two years and make the 2014 roster.

Kinda surprised the two guys picking Canada's roster both chose Luongo given his average performance in 2010 and tendency to not handle big games well. Maybe Cam Ward? Brian Elliott?

Trying to pick Finland's three goalies would make my head explode. Kipper, Backstrom, Rask, Rinne, Niemi, Lehtonen...tough call!

Not taking injuries (Bäckström) or possible international retirements (Lidström and Alfredsson) into account.

Sedin-Sedin-Eriksson
Landeskog-Bäckström-Alfredsson
Steen-Zetterberg-Franzen
Stålberg-Berglund-Hörnqvist
Johansson

Lidström-Karlsson (would be amazing to watch)
Edler-Enström
Kronwall-OEL
Murray/Hedman/A.Larsson/Gunnarsson/Hjalmarsson..

Lundqvist..
..and two guys with his poster on their walls.

Great center depth, so-so wingers, small and not very physical but very talented defense. Maybe should have balanced it a bit better, but would really love to see OEL make the team.

If I can't choose Bäckström and Alfredsson our forwards would look a lot worse.

First two lines are interchangable, I just like those combinations.

Byfuglien is an ineresting option, depending where the USA staff would invision him in the lineup. Maybe as a PP specialist. Could play the point or front of the net.

Id say Shattenkirk, Pacioretty, Brown would be my taxi squad.

Weinhandl and Holmstrom? No chance. And Alfredsson is too old.

for the US squad, there would be some changes from the 2010 team no doubt. and imo, if we did this next year, the turnover will be even greater as kids like Shattenkirk, Leddy, McDonagh, McBain, Gardiner, etc ALL are going to make cases to be on this team. Our future defense looks like it could be very young, mobile, and offensive minded!

Goalies

Tim Thomas
Ryan Miller
Jimmy Howard

goalies - you simply cant leave Ryan Miller off this team. Just like we brought Tim Thomas along in 2010 eventhough he wasnt tearing it up, Miller belongs here. I like Howard over Quick though either way you really cant lose.

Defense

Ryan Suter
Keith Yandle
Jack Johnson
Brooks Orpik
John Carlson
Alex Goligoski
Dustin Byfuglien

defense - some very tough calls here with lots of young kids to pick from and with plenty of vets like Gleason, Liles, EJ, Martin, etc... I went with a group of guys that can bring offense and size to this team, yet still maintain being physical. Big Buff was a tough choice over Zach Bogosian who has really stepped it up this year. But I like what Buff can do at the point and infront of the net in crunch times. anyone not putting Brooks Orpik on this team are nuts! he is having a tremendous year again in Pitt, and is clearly this countries top shutdown dman by 10 miles. I love the offense that Goligoski and Yandle could generate from the point, and John Carlson is just too damn good to leave off. I love this group.

Forwards

Zach Parise
Patrick Kane
Bobby Ryan
Phil Kessel
Ryan Callahan
Erik Cole
Max Pacioretty
Paul Stastny
Ryan Kesler
David Backes
Dustin Brown
Joe Pavelski
Brandon Dubinsky

forwards - why I am not seeing more of Erik Cole on this team is beyond me! He has speed and power and would be a perfect fit on our third line. Plus he is scoring big goals with teammate Max in Montreal, both belong here. Dubinsky and Brown arent tearing it up offensively, but both have intangibles and heart to make this team every year. Hard to keep off JVR and Derek Stepan, but their time will come soon enough (and remember this is for right now, as both should make the 2014 team). Not much turnover for me so far as the guys from 2010 are pretty much still our best forwards. Okposo, Wheeler, Oshie, Wilson, Foligno, Stafford, etc are all knocking on the door, but havent made that big jump yet needed.

I am not putting Jason Pominville on this squad as I just dont want to! I know he represented the US and he has that right, but I would rather give that spot to those other players listed above imo.

Ryan Malone would be on my squad, but Erik Cole has outplayed him this year and has taken that spot...

The toughest call was Tim Connolly as he is as dynamic of a center as we could have. And with Paul Stastny not looking his best, and Connolly getting back to health and looking solid, I might switch them in a week or two if Connolly continues to produce.

Lines

1. Kessel, Kelser, Kane
2. Parise, Pavelski, Ryan
3. Cole, Backes, Pacioretty
4. Brown, Dubinsky, Callahan
Stastny

1. Suter - Orpik
2. J. Johnson - Yandle
3. Carlson - Goligoski
Byfuglien

1. Thomas
2. Miller
3. Howard

taxi squad - Tim Connolly, Kevin Shattenkirk, T.J Oshie, Zach Bogosian

That's one sick opening 5!
I've always felt that Slovakia is kind of the opposite of Finnish team, you always seem to have a few superstars but no depth. We have nothing but depth and a goalkeeper. Funny that.. Any interest in forming Fennoslovakia? :sarcasm:

Team Canada 2012

Just thought it would be fun to come up with a hypothetical Team Canada roster if the Olympic Games or World Cup were held this month rather then 2014. Here`s what my team would look like:

St. Louis-Stamkos-Neal
Eberle-Giroux-Benn
Iginla-Thornton-Marleau
Perry-Toews-Sharp
alt: Bergeron, Eriksson

Webber-Boyle
Keith-Seabrook
Doughty-Girardi
Letang

Luongo
Price
Fleury

Note: very tempted to include Tavares on this list however couldn`t justify Toews + Bergeron as the only returning centres due to Crosby`s injury + Richards and Getzlaf`s atrocious play this season.

What would your rosters look like??
