Odds are over 50% we don't draft top 4, so no immediate help from this draft on the Leafs.
Stamkos is a total wild card. If he does go UFA there are so many better teams that will want his services, so my line-up will only include Zaitsev, as he seems to be the most plausible addition.

Of course I would welcome any trade that lands us Trouba (ie Kadri if we draft Mathews) or any and all good luck in the draft.

I really don't think the Leafs are going to sign Radulov at the money he expects and they won't want him due to him being 30 next year.

I'd rather see Bozak go unless Kadri can't reach a deal with the leafs then I'd think a package of picks+player would be more likely than a 1 for 1 deal.

And if we sign ward I'd be utterly confused. We already have 1 goalie on an awful contract we don't need another one.

Leafs pick could be any of C/RW/D so really hard to say but since they are last I will do it with Matthews. Also I'm going with Loov to beat out Corrado on the back end

JVR Stamkos Michalek
Kapinen Nylander Hyman
Sosh Dvorak Marner
Komarov Gautier Laich (Captain)

Bozak, Kadri traded for picks, prospects or a defencemen. First overall traded to Arizona for Dvorak and there first rounder in 2016 drafting a defencemen. If the leafs don't get the first overall pick then one of Bozak or Kadri replaces Dvorak.

Am I dreaming here?

Now that Vessey won't sign with Nashville(Leafs tampering), I have to change my original post. Marner gets sent back down after 9 games so they don't burn a year on his ELC and insert Vessey with Nylander and Hyman and Kapinen goes with Dvorak and Sosh.

JVR. Bozak. Hyman
Michalek. Kadri. Sosh
Leo. Nylander. Brown
Greening. Laich. Levin
Marner ( he will be brought in slowly and he will play in the WJ Tournament )

Mo. Marincin
Jake. Carrick

Loov Percy

Bernier. UFA backup

Holland and Lupul ?

I think Kadri or Bozak will be traded

I still think we sign a tough mean PWF ( Lucic ) he will give our young kids alot of room to move. He is not Clarkson, has a proven trac record.

I still think Vesey will be ours.

I have no idea what they're going to do next year. You just can't have that many rookies in the NHL.

That being said, I truly believe the following players are ready for full time duty in the NHL, whether it be with the Leafs or another team:

William Nylander
Brendan Leipsic
Joshua Leivo
Zach Hyman
Sam Carrick
Nikita Soshnikov
Connor Brown
Stuart Percy
Scott Harrington
Frankie Corrado
Viktor Loov

Leivo, Sam Carrick, Percy, Harrington, and Corrado all hit waivers next year if they don't make the team. If Sam Carrick is resigned he is the only one I believe might slide through. Leivo, Percy, Harrington and Corrado are all either on opening roster or playing for a different organization. I don't think there is any in between.

Nylander, Hyman, and Soshnikov have all shown that not only can they compete in the NHL but that they stand out as regulars. Don't see how any of the three play for the Marlies next year. They won't put Nylander down next year unless he does something off ice that causes a problem, as I'm sure there's not much more he can do down in the AHL. Based on their effort levels alone, Babcock would prefer Hyman and Soshnikov on the team far more than most regulars he is forced to use like Lupul, Holland, Grabner, etc, so they're locks.

Brown, Leipsic, and Loov are waiver exempt so they probably get sent down and see spot duty during injuries until we trade more assets off next deadline and they're up full time. But in reality has anyone watched them this year and thought they don't deserve to be playing full time. It's funny, if they were assets of the Blackhawks, Rangers, Predators, etc...teams that always have one cheap spot to fill and very rarely any prospects as good...these players would slide right in like a Trevor Van Riemsdyk for Chicago, etc. But a really crappy team like the Leafs have too many similar players at similar points in their development.

No idea what they're going to do.

Basing my opinion on what we have seen this year, I don't see S. Carrick or S. Percy playing for or with the Leafs next year.

I believe you are correct in assuming Leipsic and Loov will be with the Marlies next year and be brought up when needed.

Connor Brown would have already been up if it wasn't for his injury ( as per Babcock ) so I think it would be safe to assume he will be a Leaf next season along with Soshnikov, Hyman and Nylander.

Percy, Harrington, Corrado, Carrick, and Marincin are all huge question marks for us and could all be fighting for 4 spots on the Leafs depending on who the Leafs sign.

Baring any trades or vet signings you're left with

Rielly, Gardiner, Hunwick and possibly Zaitsev. That leaves 4 spots open for those 5 guys ( Babcock likes to run with 8 D-men )

Vailev has been great and I would assume him and Loov with be up and down as need be.

Rielly - Marincin ( Playing great together right now )
Gardiner - Zaitsev ( If Zaitsev can play with with Gards )
Hunwick - Carrick
Harrington/Percy - Carrado

JVR - Bozak - Brown ( I think Brown would beat out Leivo for this spot )
Soshnikov - Kadri - Komorov ( I wouldn't split these guys up )
Leivo - Nylander - Hyman
Michalek - Laich - Greening ( I can't see anyone wanting MM, BL, CG, JL or BF at the TD so why give them more mins.)
Lupul - Forese

Other than Kadri, that's who is currently signed right now.

Holland is the only RFA not on that lineup

Grabner, PAP, Boyes and Smith would/should walk.

Rielly - Marincin ( Playing good together at the moment )
Gardiner - Zaitsev ( If he plays well enough to play with Gards )
Hunwick - Carrick
Harrington / Percy - Corrado

I think it would make sense to try and move 1 of our excess D men as well as Holland at the draft for another pick as we would lose them for nothing otherwise.

Looking at playing time this year it seems like Percy is the odd man out. I'd rather try and move Hunwick but that would be a really young and unexperience D-core.

Projected Leafs 2016-17 Opening Night Lineup

Forwards:
James van Riemsdyk - Tyler Bozak 'A' - Mitch Marner
Nikita Soshnikov - Nazem Kadri - Connor Brown
Leo Komarov 'A' - William Nylander - Zach Hyman
Colin Greening - Brooks Laich 'A' - Milan Michalek
Spare(s): Byron Froese

Defensemen:
Matt Hunwick - Morgan Rielly 'A'
Jake Gardiner - Nikita Zaitsev
Martin Marincin - Frank Corrado
Spare(s): Connor Carrick

Goalies:
Jonathan Bernier
Garret Sparks

Notes:
-I know this is pretty much this years current roster, but since the TDL they've been playing very well. Add another year for the young guys plus the games they're playing now and it will give them a lot of experience. We will probably draft in the top 5-6 this year which will be a great prospect to add to the cupboard. The only new additions are Marner and Zaitsev. I think Marner will be hard to keep in the OHL next year as he dominates down there. I'm assuming the Leafs will sign Zaitsev and slot him in for top 4 minutes, but it is hard to tell.
-I think Lou might pull a "Robidas" to Lupul and somewhat push him into early retirement. If not, possibly a buy-out or a retained trade, either way, he's not on the roster.
-As much as I'd like to keep Holland, it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Probably gone via trade.
-The UFAs are gone.
-I opted to go no captain and just name 4 alternates.
-I could be super optimistic and toss in Matthews/Stamkos/Vesey but there is a very realistic chance we get none of those players so this lineup is much more realistic.
-Don't bash me for the lineups, these aren't necessarily my predictions for the depth chart but more the roster and my guess to where players might slot in.
