I don't think it's that big. I mean, if it goes bad, it's most likely to go bad in that third year, and then you've got 6.25m of dead weight on your roster, but only for the one year. All teams have a bad contract or two. And the guy could very well still give you 20 goals by then. I think 30 is realistic this year. With the cap going up, 6.25 for a guy who can very plausibly go 30-30 is a steal. They basically gave him Patrick Marleau money, but Kovalchuk is much more likely to still have gas in the tank.
