Montreal fan here, trying to settle something.

Would you trade the 2nd overall pick for Cole Caufield?
If the Devils had the #5 pick instead of the #2 pick, I'd trade THAT for Caufield.

As it is, I'm going to take a hard "NO!" to that proposal.

Not because I don't feel Cole is talented but that Slaf is not only talented but has the Size and Ability AND "NEED" the Devils require.

I wouldn't trade #2 for Debrincat, why the hell would I trade it for Caufield? Just pick freaking Slafkovsky or Wright and thank the lottery ball gods for shining their good fortune on us.

I mean Caufield is still on an ELC and has like 3 times the team control that DeBrincat has so that’s a pretty good reason.

Not saying I make that trade but it’s probably more of what we the organization should be looking for than the players closer to FA that people have been throwing around.

love the player and the history between him and Hughes with team USA but we need larger forwards or at least forwards that play big and go to the dirty areas of the ice.
This about sums it up. We have a good level of skill, but need players that will play a heavier game now. I would say no to Caufield.

I have no problems if the devils make that deal. CC is going to be a very legit point producer in the NHL.

Would I make the trade? Eh. I don't think I'd make it. There's some roster construction questions. But again, I wouldn't be at all apoplectic if the devils did it

Caufield is good enough that I’d have my team do a deep dive into the pros and cons. It’s not something I would dismiss out of hand.

Huge Caufield supporter and I even said try to acquire him back when he was struggling ... But I'm taking my chances with Slafkovsky.

I just don't think a 30 game stretch brought his value up this much. If anything it just offsets his 1 goal in 30 games.

I think the value is there, if not a bit in NJ favor cause Caufield looks more of a real deal to someone who hasnt even played.

Goalscorer? Great! Buddy of Jack? Awesome!

I think it comes down to personal preference with this deal. Some are gonna like it more than others but no one should absolutely hate it.

I wouldnt do it, but I'd be on board with it if Fitz was.

Why would Montreal want to do it? I'm sure they like their guy plenty .. not worth messing with unless they were getting a mega haul for him. Pick #2 wouldn't be enough for me to ship him off if I was Montreal.

Just wanted to point out how fascinating I find the discrepancy between the results of the same poll in 2 forums

Here's what the same poll results look like in the other side:

Now this doesn't in any way mean any of the 2 communities is right or wrong or knows its hockey better. It is more related to a psychology bias, we cherich what we consider our own and tend to instinctly give it more value simply because its ours.... Fascinating :D

The Monty Hall 3 Doors problem.

If the show offers to let you swap doors, you should say yes. Even after presented with the math showing this is true, some people feel that they still wouldn’t switch doors because they couldn’t emotionally deal with trading out of the winning prize.

They’d rather stay with a lower chance of winning than have held the winning door and then actively made a move to lose it.

Sure. And Slafkovsky will be on an ELC too. Deal makes zero sense unless you’re getting a proven asset in return.

I would not trade Cole Caulfield for the number 2 pick, but I would trade the number 2 pick for Cole Caulfield.

In a vacuum for sure, this year, I'd agree. I'm not certain it's the right move for us though without moving someone else in the top 6. You can't have more than half your top 6 sub 5' 11'.

Yeah, I am just thinking in a vacuum. If you have a large club, then yes. I suppose with a small team, then not. I am just not sold on this draft, and I still think Caulfield will be a solid 30 goal scorer for years to come.

I think he's a poor fit for NJ with how our roster is currently constructed for the future. We already have small, fast skilled forwards in Jack and Bratt. We have a skilled motor guy in Mercer who I like better at RW vs C. We have Holtz who has questions but still has the potential to be an elite goal scorer at RW.

There were 83 hits in game 1 of the Finals on Wednesday....adding another undersized skilled winger doesn't seem like the best roster construction for the playoffs when we have the ability to take a 6'4" 220lb 18 year old who has some elite skills of his own and will score in the dirty areas.

What has Slafkovsky proven that Caufield hasn’t ? Caulfield has essentially 1 season under his belt with a 29/51 per 82 - a bulk of that on an awful team. The only point in trading the pick would be to turn some of the uncertainty into certainty while not giving up a lot of cap or team control - he (or players of his ilk) are the only ones who make sense.

Again - I’m not advocating for it as I would just make the pick. But people around here were tossing the 2nd overall for players making (or about to make) way more money and with way less term. Trading the 2 for Caulfield is more defensible to me than the 2 for DeBrincat.

Some home love to guest. You can not sold on the draft class, but price is exist in the moment of time, and Cofield doesn’t rise his price much. And for now little dwarf with questionable two way impact isn’t worth the things Slafkovsky could bring.
Every team fans like their own assets more, but pick number one and number two are unquestionably high assets and ever were.
Even after two weeks of the new season Slafkovsky could turn into the pumpkin and Smallfield could score 10 goals in five games. And price will turn around. But now course is different.
I easily believe Miniaturefield could be 40+ goal scorer, I even prefer him over Debrinkat, because of contract and age. But now he is in three years from draft and he is still a projection. Good projection I believe. Good little projection. Like cute corgi, he should grow in adorable boy. He will be a wonderful shepherd doggy. How can you even discuss the sale of such a puppy? How much do you want for it? Come back when he grows up. Oh, I'm sorry.

G-money, you’re the cats pajamas brother.

Love the D-Cat, love CC but don’t mess around. Grab Slaf (or Wright if that’s the case) and profit from the nectar of the gods. Happy to send Montreal the mechanical version of Bubo instead for future considerations.

They don’t wanna trade Cc for 2nd, we don’t wanna trade 2nd for cc, everybody happy.

Btw would be “fun” when Cc will start to pan out next season, will score 30+ goals, Slaf will start to only adapt for new speed of the game, and they will say “I tallg-ya” by Cartman’s voice. And guys like Jim will sing along with them. It could be a sad sad song for devils ears, but we should wait for the second verse, and especially bridge. There will be some plot twist moment. The chorus will sound different after that.

Trading it is a crap idea either way. That said, Caulfield is not a proven commodity. I’m a fan but it’s not a shoe in that he ends up in the same class as Debrincat. Debrincat is a proven elite goal scorer.
