good, we should improve drafting. That is a much smarter way to go than tanking for years and years. It's no like Florida/Buffalo/Edmonton are exactly at the cusp of getting the puck anytime soon.

yup they will get right on it, we have seen them pull stars out later picks for decades now.

funny you bring up Buffalo they just flushed out the failed core that was built by UFAs and trades,.

This is a moot thread when you consider that none of the league's worst teams are going to trade their 1st round picks this year. In theory it's a no brainer

I'm right...

No, you're not. The team with the worst record in the league at the end of the '14-15 season will have the chance to draft one of McDavid or Eichel. They are guaranteed a top-2 pick in the 2015 draft.

I'm right...

nope, sorry

These changes will be phased in over a two-year period, beginning with the Draft Lottery in 2015.

2015 NHL Draft Lottery

The odds of winning the first overall selection in the NHL Draft for the 14 non-Playoff teams will be adjusted to more appropriately reflect the current state of competitive balance in the League. This will result in a more evenly-balanced allocation of odds, with the 10 highest-finishing non-Playoff qualifying teams receiving higher (better) Draft Lottery odds than they received previously and the four lowest-finishing teams receiving lower (worse) odds. The revised set of odds will remain in effect year-to-year in the future.

Non-Playoff Team
(Fewest Pts. to Most) New Draft Lottery Odds Odds Under Former Allocation

1 20.0% 25.0%
2 13.5% 18.8%
3 11.5% 14.2%
4 9.5% 10.7%
5 8.5% 8.1%
6 7.5% 6.2%
7 6.5% 4.7%
8 6.0% 3.6%
9 5.0% 2.7%
10 3.5% 2.1%
11 3.0% 1.5%
12 2.5% 1.1%
13 2.0% 0.8%
14 1.0% 0.5%

I'd trade any/everyone. Kardi/Gardiner/Reilly/Nylander/1st rounder for him. Maybe a little exaggerated but you get the point.

This kid is going to be unreal. People of that caliber bring in other talent through UFA. If you want a championship you need a player like this.

yeah Buffalo should be ashamed. Barely a year into their tank(maybe not even depending on when you say they started it), and they're not world beaters already. 1 draft and a couple good 18 year olds from it, they should be at least in the top 3 by now.

Take me back to when people said Edmonton would just suddenly not be a disaster one day. Good times.

I'm not saying Buffalo will be good(I think they will be but I didn't say it), but to expect them to be good, not even a year after they started the tank is absurb.

If the tank works then they'll be good in 3/4 years, maybe slightly sooner if they get McDavid

Dude, you're missing the point entirely. You do not become a good team by getting 1 or 2 elite players. You become a good team by getting a TEAM of good players. TBL are a good team now, not because of Drouin but because they are a team of good players like palat, kucherov, Johnson etc. Just like Anaheim, just like Detroit it's the depth that makes a difference.

Doing a firesale for mcdavid wont give you depth

Tampa's a good team because they supplemented their core with support players. Their two best players were 1st (Stamkos) and 2nd (Hedman) overall picks, respectively.

They also drafted Johnson, Palat, Johnson, Kucherov, Killorn, Connolly etc.

You can easily get depth players. You can't easily get generational talents.

Edmonton wilfully sucks. They could trade one of their better guys and get some D. They could get a better Tender.

They are collecting for some stupid dynasty template they feel they can achieve. Can't stand the organization.

Get the correct mix of depth players, along with a few star players, you can trump the need to have a generational talent.

Get your talent pool in order at the right time, and, with a lot of luck, you can win a championship without that so called generational talent IMHO! ;)
