Someone posted in the press conference thread about how if you went back to 2010 and didn’t make any trades, and just drafted the highest ranked remaining player on ISS every time, the team would be better than it is now.
That resonated with me. Was it true? Well, I went ahead and tested the theory, using only the first two rounds of the draft and only the top 30 rankings from ISS.
Remember, this assumes that no expiring assets are traded and that all NHL capable players are resigned. It also assumes that we do not sign any free agents whatsoever. In essence, it is a ridiculous scheme in many ways because there would definitely be opportunities to trade for mutual benefit with other teams, and we would also obviously sign depth players as free agents, at the very least.
Roster Players from 2010 still in the NHL (or sort of):
Cogliano
Horcoff
Hemsky
Penner
Smid
Gilbert
Visnovsky
Souray
Dubnyk
Existing Prospects:
Eberle
Paajarvi
Riley Nash
Lander
2010 Draft:
Pick Hall 1st overall
Pick Jon Merill instead of Tyler Pitlick 31st.
Other picks came from trades so are excluded
2011 Draft
Pick Nugent Hopkins 1st overall
We don’t get Klefbom although he is the highest ranked player at 19. Obviously we all would have made the Penner trade but this assumes that there is actually no management.
Take Grimaldi at 31
2012 Draft
Pick Yakupov 1st overall
Pick Collberg at 31 over Mitch Moroz
2013
Pick Nichushkin 8th overall over Nurse
2014
Pick Dal Colle at 3 instead of Draisaitl (bit of a weird ranking by ISS IMO, he is ahead of Bennett too)
BTW – ISS for 2015 has Strome ahead of Hanafin
Roster
Coach – Tom Renney (Pat Quinn Deceased)
Hall – Nugent Hopkins – Eberle
Nichushkin – Gagner – Yakupov
Cogliano – Nash – Hemsky
Paajarvi – Horcoff – Lander
Penner
Gilbert – Petry
Smid – Visnovsky
Souray - Merill
Dubnyk

This team has way better defensive ability and I would say is definitely a superior team overall. It also has a great coach. Other trades and signings could have been made – we could have done the trade with Penner and had Klefbom to add to this mix, and we could have done something like the Perron trade. We could have still signed Shultz as a 3rd pairing powerplay specialist.
This speaks to just how bad management has been in this organization. When we talk about how HFers could do a better job than this management, it’s no joke. An idiot could do a better job. Here’s the proof.
