One of my favorite tournaments, the World Junior A Challenge is less than a month away and I'm really excited. Run by Hockey Canada, this tournament is meant for them to showcase the talent playing in the ten Canadian Junior Hockey Leagues (not the CHL). They separate into two teams, one for the East (NOJHL, OJHL, CCHL, QJHL, MHL), the other for the West (BCHL, AJHL, SJHL, MJHL, SIJHL). This year, Switzerland and the Czech Republic will send their national under-20 teams. Russia will send their under-18 team. The US, as usual, will send players from the USHL who are not part of the National Team Development Program. They have won six out of the last seven tournaments.
On November 17, the United States named the first 20 players to their roster, all from the USHL. They will name one more defenseman and one more goaltender to the team before the tournament starts (NOTE: This information has been updated). Perhaps the most notable inclusion on the team is Chase Pearson, who played at this very event two years ago for Canada East. There are five NHL draft picks (Pearson, Ryan Zuhlsdorf, Kris Oldham, John Marino, Ryan Bednard). Only Zuhlsdorf and Mitch Reinke were on the team last year.
