F### off Winnik! The guy sucks can't score, terrible passer, afraid to use his size. Was a detriment in Pens playoff push. Hopefully Babs sees how crap he is and takes him out of the line up early! What a waste of cap space!!

I am so tired of this type of Leafs fan.

What else you got? Phaneuf is a pylon; trade him for a bag of pucks? Bozak is an AHL centre? Reimer can't stop a beach ball?

The mandate for next years roster seems pretty clear

1. Bring in players who have something to play for, Parenteau, Spaling looking for long term contracts on the open market after this season

2. Players who demonstrate hard work and effort every shift

3. Not high in talent but high on hard work and character (but not in the David Bolland/Davis Clarkson leadership nonsense kind of way)

We may get beaten very often, but we won't be out worked. As the young guys develop they will learn first and foremost to work hard, and that will hopefully allow their natural skill to shine through

I have been saying this all year.

Every season John Davidson says every year: He can't promise anything in terms of wins, or loses, or playoff spots. But he will promise that they will never be outworked. And that sentiment is always stated from GM, to Coach, to Players. everytime they lose if it was a bad one - first thing they say is "we were outworked, and that can't happen again."

that's what we need to have here. we might not be talented, we could finish worse than we did last year, but it won't be becuse we were outworked every night.

Toronto
One of the things I am thrilled about yesterday is Toronto’s free agent pickups.

Daniel Winnik for 2 years at 2.25 is an excellent score. Especially since we traded him at the deadline last season to Pittsburgh for Zach Sill, a second round pick and a fourth round pick

Toronto also added in PA Parenteau and Mark Arcobello who both have deals similar to Santorelli, Booth and Winnik last season. Could Parenteau and Arcobello have a future on the Leafs, or will they play decent enough under Babcock that Toronto moves them at the deadline for future assets? Either way, these are excellent contracts for the Leafs as they are no risk, all reward pickups.

Toronto’s first move of the day was bringing in veteran Matt Hunwick who has bounced around in the NHL over. He is going to bring some stability to the lineup and will likely be used on the third pairing. The Leafs scooped up Hunwick for a two year deal with just a 1.2 million dollar cap hit. To me, this was excellent news as it reduced the chance of us resigning Cody Franson at a much larger price tag

The 2 year/$4.5 million deal with Daniel Winnik makes us better in the short-term. Which might be a bad thing if the Leafs plan on tanking in the next couple of seasons! lol.

My guess is the goal with this deal was to bring in a vet with character who would be a great locker room guy and provide a positive influence for the kids. Daniel Winnik is a great third-liner/penalty killer/part-time second-liner who can help you win games. But the Leafs are not in any position to make the playoffs anytime soon. Let alone contend. So that's probably not why Winnik was brought in.

You have to wonder if recruiting guys who make our team better in the short-term is a good strategy for the Leafs right now though. Even if it's an unrestricted free agent that we didn't have to give up any assets for. You add veteran character and locker room presence with a guy like Daniel Winnik. But you also hurt our tanking chances. The Leafs' roster is gutted at this point so Winnik will likely play with Kadri. So our second line will probably be good. And if you drop Winnik down to the third-line to play with Komarov and Spaling, they will be a tough line to face too.

So as long as we have Bozak on the 1st line, our 1st line will suck. But if we have a competitive 2nd or 3rd line whose going to win us some points, we're going to drop further down in the draft. Kessel is the $64 million man. And therefore gets the flack. But he's a winger. Wingers are the least defensively responsible position in hockey. The weakest link is Tyler Bozak! When Kessel plays with Crosby and/or Malkin, he's going to be a great $47.25 million man for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He's not supposed to be the franchise player. The Leafs' need a $8 million/yr+ centre. And if Mitch Marner becomes the next Patrick Kane instead of the next Claude Giroux, we're in trouble because it's difficult to acquire a first-line centre in a trade or free agency without over-paying for one. If William Nylander doesn't become an NHL centre, we're in trouble as well.

In an ideal world, Mitch Marner will become the next Claude Giroux. And William Nylander will become a great first-line winger who can occasionally play centre and take face-offs when Marner or Kadri are injured.

Winnik is a welcome addition to have back as he is a hard working player that leaves it all on the ice and willing to work hard nightly.

The fact Leafs got a 2nd and 4th for him is more than we could get for Bozak and Lupul and now Winnik comes back and its like getting those picks for renting him out for a few months.

We did flip the second rounder we got for Winnik back to the Penguins in order to get them to eat $6.75 million x 7 years from Kessel's inflated contract though. We used that asset to clean up Dave Nonis' mess.

I never wanted Phil Kessel to be re-signed to $8 million/year. And now we had to give up that solid second-round pick (which could have turned into a great player) just to get rid of Kessel. I'm still sore about that deal. If we traded Phil Kessel two years ago in the 2013 off-season, we could have received a good return on him for a 1 year rental. A better return than we received now. And without having to leave $1.25 million x 7 years on the books. But the Leafs' made the playoffs in the shortened 2013 season and I was told that I was crazy for wanting to get rid of Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf. lol. And this was back when Phil Kessel was pulling PPG numbers. And it was still obvious that Kessel was not the man for the job.

It's rare for wingers to be effective as franchise players. Does Phil Kessel strike you as a Teemu Selanne, Brett Hull, Guy Lafleur type of player? He's not on that level. Phil Kessel will always be the complimentary first-liner. Just like Corey Perry. He is not "the guy" (Ryan Getzlaf, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin if he didn't play second fiddle to Crosby). Corey Perry makes $8 million+/yr but so does Ryan Getzlaf. We don't have a Ryan Getzlaf. Whenever you see a team with a winger who makes Phil Kessel money, they usually have a true first-line centre to play with him.
