Except our 'talent factory' was due to excessive scouting overseas in order to find diamonds in the rough. That doesn't fly anymore in this day and age of scouting.

Nah. The last elite players we drafted were in the 90s. Datsyuk and Zetterberg in 98 and 99.

Gonna need a real stroke of luck to rebuild without tanking, which is kinda unrealistic

Is it mainly because of the loss of Datsyuk or are other factors in play?

Datsyuk is a part of it, but we aren't that much worse without him. We were barely an average team last year. There's Zetterberg deteriorating, Ericsson and Kronwall deteriorating (Kronwall is basically a #5 now), the fact that most of the Wings big minute-eating defenseman are terrible transitional players, the majority of our forward roster is/was small and vanilla (until Mantha and AA were incorporated) and Larkin was lost for a bit to start the season as he was transitioned to center.
