Not to take away from what Marleau has accomplished... some people underestimate how difficult it is to stay healthy enough and good enough to play that many games in the NHL.

IMO, Marleau would still need another 419 games to break the true record of longevity that people are amazed at when it comes to Gordie Howe... number of professional games played... since it seems the WHA is the only other league ever considered to be a major professional league by the NHL.

Sincere congrats to Marleau for this amazing accomplishment.

Is he still playing because he deserves a spot, or is he still going because of the record?

He's had a great career. I was going to vote indifferent, but something just kinda feels meh, if he's doing it for the record, while not actually contributing to a team at this point.

I think it was overly telling that he expressed interest in going to a contender, yet not a single team wanted him, even for veteran experience.

Solid career, nothing taking that away, just somewhere between indifferent and unexcited about this actual record.

Ya when SJ let him and Pavelski go I thought ‘em both done- turns out that was only true for Pat. Kinda forced into some production in Toronto, now diminishing returns in SJ. But- I like to think he’s doing it for the love of the game. He’s a historic Shark on a bad team, it makes for a story, so they let him keep playing and he does it because hockey is fun. I’m sure the record factors in somewhere, but I doubt he wants to quit or is dogging it. I figure it’s just more of an unspoken deal with SJ and him, helps both sides.

Anyways, I’ll be happy for him but also largely indifferent. It’s cool, but eh, I’m here for a good time not a long time. Pat is like, the perfect dude to get this record. It’s an attendance award, and Marleau seems like a dude who cares about good attendance.

Hard for me to decide between no and I don’t care. No I won’t be glad and I don’t care?

Honestly, if he was nowhere near the GP record I doubt the Sharks would have signed him. It was just a favor to him after years of loyalty to the team.

Couldn’t care less. Games played says more about health and commitment than it does skill or all-time ranking.

Good for Patty, even as a Pens fan who saw how much of a ghost his current form is.

Health, commitment and skill. A 4th liner who stays healthy and commited has a shorter shelf life than a more skilled player.

Wait, aren't "no" and "indifferent" the same answer? Both mean "no"...
one means no i wont be happy, the other means I dont care,

Kinda like the difference between an atheist (god doesn't exist) and agnostic (I don't care if he does or if he doesn't)

I'm happy for Marleau, he seems like a stand up guy and obviously bring mentioned in the same sentence as Gordie Howe will make any hockey fan giddy.

But obviously, this isn't the real record, since it doesn't account for the +700 game Howe played in the WHA. So while it's nice for him it's not really earth-shattering or era defining or anything like that. Just a nice little nod to the longevity of a very good player.

FWIW, agnosticism doesn't mean someone is indifferent. It means they don't claim to know for sure, and won't commit to either opinion. Atheists and agnostics have in common that they do not have faith in god(s)... agnostics simply leave the door open to the possibility of it.

Back to this subject, OP is asking whether people are glad that Marleau is breaking the record. If someone is indifferent, they are clearly not glad. Anything other than a "yes" is a "no".

No. Gordie Howe is a name that transcends hockey, and he is one of the most important people in the sports' history, so I'd have rather seen him hold onto the record.

Marleau is a name that no non hockey fans know, and in 20 years is a career that won't be well remembered. Sounds harsh but its the truth.

Let him play another 500 games in the KHL then come back to the NHL for a short stint and be reasonably productive, then I'll tell you how I feel about it.

Indifferent verging towards happy. It's not a huge deal to me either way, but it's cool for him and mildly amusing to see people all grumpy about a non-amazing career guy getting the record.

its a great achievement for him. Hard to do even in todays "soft" NHL, his durability and commitment to conditioning in his advanced age should be commended.
