Wild would do this because Granlund has 1 year until UFA( will want a big raise) and Wild isnt contending soon. They should go complete rebuild. Pesce is on a good contract for 4yrs, A 1st rounder is very valuable.

What should be a pick in the second half of the first round, and what would be a third pairing right D? There’s zero chance we do this. It’s poorly thought out from the Wild point of view.

Fair enough. Carolina does have Kuokkanen, Saarela and Necas, who all are very promising prospects. Maybe something aroundthem could be done?

Carolina get:

Granlund
Kähkönen

Wild get:

-Pesce
-Necas/Saarela
-1st

Still not interested in Pesce. And we’re not really interested in trading Kähkönen either for that matter.

No! Big No from Canes!

Why? Granlund would be a very good addition to the team and Staal back would give time for Kuokkanen to adapt to the big league. The overall look of the team is good enough to do some damage post-season IMO

Ok. What is Wilds biggest needs then? Prospects, picks sure but some salary has to go back. Granny has 1yr until UFA, so Better be reasonable ask

The goalie is on the wrong side of the deal.
Why should the Wild give away their only goalie prospect?
Why should they deal for a D?

You are not good at this.

If you want Granny, think about Svechnikov as a base.

Svechnikov is obviously a no-go. Granlund, as good as he is, doesnt fetch a cost-controlled prospect this good with 1 year until UFA.

No from Carolina. I feel this is just a bad for.

We’re not going to trade Pesce for a player with one year before ufa.

Martinook just signed days ago - why would we turn around and trade him? What would that do to the teams reputation?

Also not excited about giving away an unprotected first (I wouldn’t count on the playoffs) or getting back Kahkonen.

Trade is offseason, for a good reason. Carolina can have talks with Granlund about an extension before the trade. Eric Staal signing would come before the trade and I`d expect adding theese two players would cement the playoffs for 2019-2020. Kähkönen is actually a very fine goalie-prospect. The 1st is valuable alright, but with Kuokkanen, Svechnikov, Necas, Saarela etc. it can be dealt. Also one of the prospects could be available. Preferrable Necas or Saarela.

So dealing a package of say Necas/Saarela, Pesce and a 1st leaves Hurricanes with this;

Granny-Aho-Teräväinen
Svechnikov-E.Staal-Niederraiter
Kuokkanen- J.Staal-Necas/Saarela
McGinn-Martinook-Wallmark
Foegele

Thats a damn nice corps there.

The sentiment from Canes fans is that Pesce is better than Dumba and Spurgeon. Wild fans (me included) believe he's better than neither. Let's split the difference and say he's our 2nd pairing RD. Bumping one of our RD capable of playing 25 minutes down to our 3rd line.

Ignoring the Kahkonen for Martinook, which itself is a poor trade:

We're trading a consistent high-60 point player in a position of need (scoring RW) for a 2nd pair defender (optimistically) in a position of strength and a late first (a gamble if it will amount to an nhl player at all).

It just makes the Wild worse now and in the future.

Hasn’t Carolina done enough to Minnesota already?

If one considered Pesce a top-pairing RD, that and a 1st for Granlund seems like okay "value." But most GMs don't make trades based on "value"; Fenton obviously doesn't. They make them primarily based on needs and a team with Dumba and Spurgeon does not need Brett Pesce, especially when they've also got Suter and Brodin on the left. He would be redundant.

The one devil's-advocate argument I'll make for it is that it would allow us to move Spurgeon if we thought we could get a Granlund replacement for him. That would make our defense cheaper and shake up the forwards while hopefully making the team a little younger. But finding a Spurgeon trade that justifies making this one would be difficult, so it's not likely.

Bottom line: trading our most creative offensive forward for a defenseman that doesn't score much would be the most bass-akwards move this team could make.

Couldn't agree more. The Mild really should blow up their operation and start from a clean slate instead of waiting that the value of their remaining assets dilute to non-existence. Just try to gather as many 1st round picks possible and start fresh.

If it comes to that it comes to that, but we're not there yet.
