whats wrong with the word "try"? are you saying trades or draft picks or ufa come with guarantees?

Succeed/fail, no try in pro sports. When a GM signs a guy trending in the wrong direction to a multiyear deal he is doing so with a foot out the door. Vanek, not good. Staal, looking really good. But 50/50 is still only "ok".

I haven't been here long but you're smarter than this.

Was going to respond, but this pretty much sums it up...

So you think Fletcher or an intermediary had verbal/written communication and an agreement in place to sign Vanek day 1 of free agency?

Did Fletcher know Vanek was interested? Probably, it was widely known he wanted to come home.

Did Fletcher use that knowledge to plan his offseason around signing a good point producer for less than market. Likely, he'd be stupid not to.

Was an agreement in place? God no. No GM is stupid enough to risk direction communcation with another player under contract. ****, Benning got fined for talking about a player on the radio.

Should also be noted, that Vanek wasn't exactly a sure thing from the Wild's perspective. We had cash for one of Iginla or Vanek, and it's well documented that we were in Iginla's top 3 but we wouldn't offer the third year Colorado did.

Vanek didn't sign within minutes of free agency opening, it was well into the afternoon after we were out on Iginla. Not out of the question, nor would it surprise me if Fletcher preferred Iginla.

Hardly a signed and sealed deal just waiting for July 1st.

Yoda, is that you?

Vikings tried to put a championship team together this year. Unfortunately, injuries derailed that plan. I appreciate them realizing the time was now and going for it. Just sucks it didn't work out.

I appreciate the effort, with sound logic, of trying.

Fletcher himself? Of course not but verbal agreement? Yes, absolutely.

And yeah......he said it on the radio. What choice did the NHL have? Otherwise tampering penalties are darn rare and for good reason.

So why wasn't it done at 10:01 AM, and why the dance with Iginla?
