After being totally inept on the PP for the first dozen or so games (1 for 23), the Wild have abandoned using PP Units and have just run their top 3 lines intact (mostly top 2).

Any other recent examples of teams not running special teams on the PP?

Fun fact: Wild are 2 for 4 on the PP since they stopped using units.

They didn't have special teams in Soviet hockey. Usually used top 2 lines on PP.

Mike Keenan used to do this though not with any success.

Always seems like Russian international teams do too.

Didn't the Sabres run out the 4th line on the PP a few years ago because Bylsma threw a tantrum?

Was this long-term? Because if it was just for one PP or whatever, Tippett does this often when the PP isn't clicking in a game.

My favorite part is Foligno and Parise getting more PP time than Fiala, and Dumba not getting any PP time.

It’s the coaches basically admitting to everyone that they don’t deserve their full salaries.
My favorite bpart about it is their PP looked really dangerous first two games with Fiala, Kaprizov, Dumba, Parise and spurgeon. But they got blanked. And never tried again.

Not that it was actual abandonment of a PP unit but the Lightning in 2011 had about a single minute to score a PP goal on any given chance and if you could survive that minute you were effectively done killing the penalty. The Lightning used to run something Steven Stamkos, Vinny Lecavalier, Marty St. Louis, Teddy Purcell and Victor Hedman on unit 1 and then follow it up with some mountain of 4th line shit like Nate Thompson, Tom Pyatt and Adam Hall.

The last 50 seconds of PP time would be pure "f*** it" and we'd practically kill the penalty for them using like half our penalty killers. Is it any wonder how we went from 1st place to 29th the following year in PP%

If the PP unit isn’t clicking I don’t see a huge deal rolling one of your top 2 lines since the chemistry might help. Obviously this isn’t a long term solution so I don’t see what the big deal is.

Smart move. It had gotten to the point where players were gripping so badly.

They had no chemistry, exacerbated by the COVID mayhem. Plus, they will not have a lot of practice time on the coming days as they play catch-up making up games.

Normal PP lines will return in the not too distant future.
