Cowen AINEC. I havent used that one in a long while but for me it definitely applies here.

Tough one....I think Cowen is more replaceable in his current state but Wier is weaker defensively and doesnt bring an edge to his game.

I'm going to go with Wier. Wier's offense is already NHL caliber well Cowen still need to work on the defensive aspects of his game to fill his role. If Wier doesnt get any better i'm sure lots of teams would take him just as a bottom pairing pp specialist.

yes
Wiercioch will be a bit better but Cowen's style is more needed.

Don't see either being more than a #4. Both are slow and dumb(Cowen being full on dumb). Slow + dumb = liability. Pretty much the exact opposite of an ideal defenseman.

To be fair though, Cowen does want to be good.

Wiercioch, we need more puck movers. but cowen will likely stay for murray to defend his top 10 pick.

When has this happened?

Sorry, I didn't realize there were fans here who hopped on board during the past two seasons. In Cowen's first season he had more than a few amazing moments based on his physical play, and he picked up where he left off for a while when he first came back from injury in the lockout year. You can find videos of some of the plays on youtube if you are interested.

Too easily people forget just how dominant Cowen was as a physical force...

The odd hit ≠ "taking over a game"

Taking over a game can really only apply in a negative way for these 2 players...John Holmes said it best though.

I think Cowen will match Konisarek physically/defense and Komisarek did not break out until 24

Cowen has offensive too... 10-15G upside

Wiercioch can give and receive NHL quality passes while he keeps his feet moving and his head up. So I choose him.

Patty's tendency to pinch at the wrong time can be corrected with coaching; especially if a guy like Jason Smith gets the reigns. Same can be said for his ability to defend the cycle game, and his puck retrieval skills.

Cowen's awful skillset I'm less optimistic about. He doesn't look as though he's in lock-step with the other four guys on the ice. He struggles with basic passing, as well as with speedy forwards on the rush. He seems to think he has more time out there than he actually has. Let's hope it's all injury-related and that he can recover, but again, this past season was real bad. Like, consistently worse than Kuba at his worst.

That's fair. I think it is safe to say that Cowen is more of a risk, but I would also had that he has greater upside. If Cowen pans out there is no question in my mind he can be more valuable than Wiercioch. But Patty's skill set is way above Cowen's right now, which makes him the far safer choice.

Komisarek is – and pretty much always was – awful. You can't be a defenseman with zero mobility in this league anymore. I know it's largely due to the injuries, but I don't think Cowen has the mobility to be a dominating defenseman.

There was a time Komisarek had the mobility... Before he went to Toronto he was sick... Wicked on the Habs for a couple years

Cowen. I remember when people thought Hedman busted. Same situation as Cowen.

Cowen can completely take over a game and dominate. I don't think there are as much physically imposing players as Cowen(when he tries) I recall earlier this year he threw Phaneuf to the ice with one hand while in a standstill.

I still think Cowen can be a top tier defender in this league. Although sometimes his IQ makes me think I'm wrong.

Then again, I remember same thing with Turris last year. He looked so stupid in certain situations but with confidence and experience, his ability took off.

Komisarek is a conservative ceiling for Cowen.

Cowen has 15 points in 68 games +0 and 214 hits in a HORRIBLE year. That's actually amazing in a way, lol.
