He is a captain (it was stated before by coach Znarok), he would've had "C" on his jersey if he would arrive at the start of the tournament. Since he wasn't there at that moment, Kovalchuk was named as captain.

He was captain of last year's gold medal WHC team, when the Capitals didn't make the playoffs. He came too late to be captain again. It is my sincere hope that he never has the time to be captain of the WHC team again.
