Why hasn't the NHL changed to a 3 point system for regulation win? Are they considering it?

I don't understand the logic.

If you got two points for a win and zero points for a loss that would "encourage teams to really go for it" because if they don't, they get zero points.
I just woke up, yeah what I said didn’t really make sense. Forget that last sentence.

What they should consider is getting rid of the bonus 3rd point altogether. Just let ties be ties (after a 5-10min OT if you must). Make every game worth 2 points. I'm sick of the gimmicks and people whining about the "loser point".

Wouldn't make a big difference.

Fixing the awful playoff format is more important, and easier to do.

All the explanation how teams stay in hunt for longer is mostly false. In most cases the difference is that in system A you'll get eliminated on Thursday and in system B on Saturday. It's never about weeks of difference.

3-point system allows teams to catch at faster rate. And in some cases teams stay in the hunt longer with 3-point system than with current NHL system.

This is how Finnish Liiga looks today. Top 6 qualify for the quarterfinals, 7th to 10th go play 1st round for two remaining spots. Each team plays 60 games.

Lukko 41/81
Tappara 37/73
Ilves 39/72
Pelicans 40/67
KalPa 42/64
TPS 40/64

Kärpät 40/63
Ässät 40/58
Jukurit 41/56
HPK 41/54
-
KooKoo 39/53
HIFK 38/53
JYP 41/52
Sport 39/49
SaiPa 40/38

Only SaiPa is really out of the hunt.

I will try to make a comparison on elimination/clinching dates in NHL this season with different point systems.

The current system makes no sense, when some games give out 3 points and some 2, NHL should pick their lane and stay on it.

They say that North-American professional sports are allergic to ties games. If a game ends in a tie it's like a movie ending without knowing what eventually happened.

If they're going to keep the shootout, then they should give the points out like this:

regulation/OT win: 2 points
shootout win: 1 point
any type of loss: 0 points
This is the winner right here.

-Keeps all the excitement of getting max points for Reg/OT win. (Partial points for an OT win is a bad idea). OT winners aren't supposed to be bittersweet.."oh we won!...but we only got 2 out 3 points..."
-Gets rid of the senseless "loser point".
-Keeps games from ending in a boring tie by still allowing 1 point to the shootout winner, and incentivizes them to end the game in regulation or OT.
