Why doesn't the league track errors?

The fluidity of hockey and subjectivity doesn't make this a worthwhile stat.

Say a defenseman pinches in on the powerplay. A forward doesn't drop back. The puck floats high up to the blueline, and the lone defender jumps to keep the puck in, but misses and falls. This leads to a shorthanded breakaway and goal. Whose error is it?

Is it an error if you enter the zone early and are offside? What if the team recovers?

What if a player passes while in a prime scoring position, and his teammate shanks the shot?

Without knowing what sort of errors are made, it's pretty useless. At least with baseball, there are few things that count as an error.

Does the NFL track errors when a cornerback blows his coverage or offensive linebacker misses a block?

I've always found it odd that in baseball if an outfielder flat out misses the ball (does not touch it as it lands or scoots by him), it's not considered an error.

Why does the pitcher get punished for a fielder's gaffe?

NFL, no. More useful sites like Pro Football Focus, yes. And they make good money doing it. That's the proper way to evaluate the game and the market rewards them.

Even then, PFF doesn't know what the play is, so they often grade players wrong. It's still subjective, albeit based on lots of tape.
