Why does Steven Stamkos underperform as a goal-scorer in the playoffs?

He is one of my favourite players, and it sucks to see him score at such an underwhelming rate in the playoffs. I get that your stats tend to go down in the playoffs, but even more-so for S.S.

He currently has 3 goals in 10 games, a GPG of 0.3, which translates to 24.6 goals in an 82 game season.
For the playoffs in his career, he has amassed a TOTAL of EIGHTEEN GOALS in 59 GAMES! 59 games! That is a GPG of 0.305, so he is performing at his current pace so far.

He is 0.219 GPG DOWN from his RS pace of 0.524. Basically, you have a 43 goal/season player who scores 19 goals fewer in the playoffs. That is HUGE.

That is horrendous for the second best goal-scorer of his generation.

He and Ovi are the greatest goal scorers of the modern era.

But the gap between the 2 is just massive. Ovi scares me way, way more.

Yeah Stamkos had a nice game tonight, but let’s see him do it again. Ovi has been a consistent beast in the postseason and will add a Conn Smythe to his trophy case this year IMO.

Stamkos is more of a perimeter shooter relying on his shot accuracy throughout his career. In the playoffs teams tend to focus more on blocking shots and crowding the front of the net not allowing perimeter shooters much of anything to look at. Playoff goals tend to be more tips and rebounds and even though Stamkos is willing to go to the dirty areas, that doesn't match his skill set as well.

I agree with this. But then Ovy is similar sort of player in terms of shooting from outside, but his shots seem to end up in the net more

Inb4 Stamkos bags a hatty in game 2...

The guy has 11 points in 11 games in the playoffs this year.

Sounds like a thread by a Caps fan trying to start something he really does not want to start.
And he had 86 points in the regular season too but he was nowhere near that good.

How much does he score in the regular season against playoff teams?

It's easier to score against a mix of playoff and non-playoff teams. And the further you go in the playoffs, the harder the opposition gets.

1) He hasn't played an insane amount of playoff games and only really underachieved in 1 playoff run. Players go cold at different times.

2) If you look at this season, you might say he is underperforming but if he puts up 2 goals in his next game then he has .5 goals per game in the playoffs this year. Anytime a player can change from .36 goals to game to .5 goals per game in a single game and have a reasonable chance at doing it (2 goals for Stamkos in 1 game), then it tells you that you are looking into something that doesn't really exist.

In other words, 1 performance can completely throw this argument out so its not really a good argument.

Was this thread created before or after he scored that crisp one-timer on Holtby??

Good assessment, but I suspect that the OP wasn't really looking for that as much as a thread to pile on of what he perceives as an under-performing player.
