Why Can't the 2014-2015 Avalanche Score Goals?

They have Iginla, Duchene, Landeskog, O'Reilly, Mackinnon, Tanguay as a top 6. That's supposed to be a good top 6, and on paper it is. Yet they are among the worst teams in GF, second worst team on PP at 13%. Shutout for the past two games. Top players are on a 50 point pace.

What is wrong with this team offensively? Does anyone have an answer based on watching this team or assessing analytics?

Have there been any other teams like Col?

Can anyone think of a team in the past like the Colorado Avalanche this year with SO much money invested in a forward core that just doesnt work? On paper its phenomenal but they just cant score to save their lives.

Toronto. But the bad contracts are spread out amongst the d and forwards for them.

New York Rangers epitomized this for almost a decade. Gifted with offensive talent in Lindros, Fluery, Bure, Messier, and Leetch and yet they couldn't make the playoffs.

Maybe we should stop anointing teams or young players as amazing because they have 1 decent or great season.

It's the PP. It's killing the production.

EDIT: legit miss Paul Stastny in this regard. By far the best PP player the Avs had.

Seriously though, every season a team with a bunch of young hotshot high draft picks or big free agent signings is anointed the next big thing and then they fall back to earth never to be heard from again a season or two later.

Not every young, up and coming team turns into the Blackhawks...when will people realize this?

Iggy and Tanguay still seem to be getting done at ages 37 and 35, though that fact is rather sad considering they're the only ones doing anything worth while on a team with forward talent like Duchene, Landeskog, O'Reilly and Mackinnon... I'm really disappointed with Mac especially as I though he was going to take his game to the next level after being so impressive as a rookie, at this rate he'll be lucky to crack 40 points.

It's the Iginla dilemma.

Coaches lean on him so much, the players do to. Especially young players.

Because the team is terrible.

It's hard to score when you're constantly chasing the puck all game.

I'm not sure Roy/Sakic know how to build a contender. They were delusional to think that some old, slow vets would make the difference this year, and it's backfiring in a big way.

We'll see if they learned from their mistakes in the coming months. What they get back in a ROR trade will tell us a lot.
