I think fans should have more of an input, but there's no really good way to allow lots of people to vote, while also preventing lots of people from hijacking the vote to make an undeserving player win the award. While the Hart is the most important trophy in the NHL, perhaps the Ted Lindsay Trophy is more meaningful, since biased journalists have no say in who wins it.

You already answered your own question.
well, not really... he said quite clearly narrow it down to 7-8 players, and only allow fans to vote from those people. Sure, I guess fans could hijack it so that the worst of the 8 players could win, but I think most "trolls" are more interested in rewarded 4th line scrubs, not the 7th or 8th best player in the league... just sayin'

Because most fans are homers, not very smart and have zero objectivity.

This. Being a fan usually leads to most biased opinions possible. Journalists are far from unbiased either, but at least some of them respect objectivity by a professional pride.

That would not work either. If fans have not their favorite players to vote, many would just vote "against" players/teams they hate.

Exactly. Look at how insecure the Leafs fans are on HF Boards. If Matthews wasn't one of those 7-8 players and McDavid was you'd could pretty much eliminate McDavid from Hart contention with Leafs fans voting against him just out of spite.

Unless it's a ranked ballot, i don't see how there will be so much "voting against" one could argue that this very thing currently happens among the media members who are deemed the deciders of who wins the Hart.

At the very least there could be a fan MVP trophy too. As long as it's named after a respected player, and the NHL elevates it to the same level as the Hart and Lindsay, there's no reason why there couldn't be another main trophy.

It’s a dumb idea for many reasons listed above. Fan voting is a total gimmick. The vast majority of votes would come from complete idiots who couldn’t name 10 NHL players not on their home team.

Every single trophy and award (that would be awarded by vote) would go players of Toronto Maple Leafs, and it would be largely irrelevant what their performances would've been in a season.

Maybe McJesus, Sid, Ovi and few other top dogs could get some votes too, but Harts, Norris, Selkes, Pyngs and such would find their resting place directly (and permanently) at a shelf in Toronto.

You'd always have big-market players winning the votes even if they were undeserved.
Fan voting works for the All Star game because that's just a gimicky fun thing. No interest in letting the fans decide who gets awards at the end of the year.

At least for the MVP Award: Hart Memorial Trophy.

Yeah, i know the fiasco with All-star game, but give them 7 players to pick and then start the voting process.

Because we would see Matthews win every award. A player like Keller could score 70G - 100A - 170pts but because of fan base sizes he wouldn't even be top 3 in votes.
