Also apparently he’s close friends with a bunch of Buffalo’s young players going all the way back to grade school. A lot of players don’t want to be in Buffalo, it’s true, but Byram definitely doesn’t seem to be one of them.

Yeah I think Byram & Cozens were both in Yale hockey academy in Abbotsford during highschool.

Seems like he'll fit in well there, and coming from a winning team should help the culture.

Without context, I think Buffalo wins this. If both players hit realistic ceilings, Byram is the better player. Two things even this out, first is injury history. If Byram can't stay healthy, it's an easy win for the Avs.

Even if he does stay healthy, though, Avs needed a 2C more than a high end LD... so from the Avs perspective, even if Byram ends up the better player, they end up a better team. So I feel like this is a much lower risk for the Avs than for Buffalo. Avs win a Cup and Mitts is a key contributor, they see this as a win even if Byram ends up a perennial Norris contender. Buffalo takes a much bigger risk. If Byram is healthy, it's probably a win. They get the better player, they aren't a contender yet so they can wait and not rush Byram through injuries, and even with their depth on LD, they can flip one for a need. High end D will always be in higher demand than 2C. If Byram does end up injured more, then this sets them back a bit.

Overall: win for the Avs from their perspective, TBD for Buffalo from their perspective

In the real world more than one team can benefit from a trade.
Buffalo MAY have got the more impactful player, but Colorado's cup window has been extended and is much brighter. Looking like this trade is exactly what both teams needed.

This is a good trade for both teams. Long term - Byram has the biggest chance to be a gamechanger. Mitts' ceiling is a solid #2C that will never really drive the pace of play.
Mitts ceiling seems higher than that. He's already a good 2C. There's a chance he bits another level with a contender.

Meh. He might put up better numbers - but I don't see him becoming a substantially different player than he is - which is a very good player.

This is the type of trade that is impossible to judge this early. Both teams got some really good value - 2024 isn't going to dertemine the winner. Give it 5 years and see.

Cut it out already..what's it been about 6 or 7 games ?? This is why HFBoards can be annoying.

Both teams won one team got a low end 1c/high end 2c the otger got a low end 1d/high end 2d now mitts is 25 but players have been hitting peak seasons I'm their 28-30 years more lately so don't be surprised if he has an incredible season also seems to already play yoff hockey while Byram in a short span looks like a top pairing d man at only 22

I voted Buffalo only because I think Byram could be a good #2 moving forward. Both teams are likely better off for making this trade in the long run, and it seems to be good short term, so both teams are really win/win here.
