It's just about a guarantee that briere and bryz are gone this summer. But what other players will be released because of cap problems, not necessarily skill or production that the flyers might go after?

Heard this rumour that the Hawks might buy Hossa out of that horrendous long deal, for fear he retired early. 8 more years with a $5.2M cap hit and he's already 34!

Let's just pick him up to play LW with Giroux....

He will have every team knocking down the door for him, but he would be my ideal forward to play along Giroux. Not only does he have a great scoring touch, but is amazing defensively.

He also seemingly goes to the finals every year.

This is a mystery. What happened to him? Could he fit in nicely at LW with Schenn and Simmonds and as an extra PP weapon, or is he done at 33?

Rangers will pay him $34M for the 7 years left.

He went to the Rangers, where all offense goes to die. Little do people know, but Derek Stepan is actually a 85 pt Forward

According to the SportsNet list of predicted favourites to be bought out in the West are:

Anaheim - Bryan Allen ($3.5 million cap hit until 2014-15)

Calgary - Matt Stajan ($3.5 million cap hit until 2013-14)

Chicago - Steve Montador ($2.75 million cap hit until 2014-15)

Colorado - Jan Hedja ($3.25 million cap hit until 2014-15)

Columbus - nobody

Dallas - Erik Cole ($4.5 million cap hit until 2014-15) - note, DFF, that SportsNet isn't paying their editors enough to spot that 'Erik' is spelled with a k and not a c ;)

Detroit - Mikael Samuelsson ($3 million for 2013-14)

Edmonton - Kevin Lowe ... uh, I mean, Shawn Horcoff ($5 million cap hit until 2014-15)

LA - nobody

Minnesota - Dany Heatley ($7 million cap hit until 2013-14)

Nashville - Paul Gaustad ($3.25 million cap hit until 2015-16)

Phoenix - nobody. I have to include the write-up: "Let’s make this clear: This isn’t happening. The Coyotes can barely afford to pay their own players. The idea of them paying a player not to play for their club is beyond logic. There’s a reason they have all that cap space."

San Jose - Martin Havlat ($5 million cap hit until 2014-15)

St. Louis - Alex Pietrangelo

Ha ha! No, they aren't buying out anyone.

Vancouver - Keith Ballard ($4.2 million cap hit until 2014-15)

And for the East:

Boston - nobody, %#$!*&&&ing nobody!!!

Buffalo - Ville Leino ($4.5 million cap hit until 2016-17)

Carolina - Tuomo Ruutu ($4.75 million cap hit until 2015-16)

Florida - Ed Jovanovski ($4.1 million cap hit until 2014-15)

Montreal - Tomas Kaberle ($4.25 million cap hit until 2013-14)

NJ - Anton Volchenkov ($4.25 million cap hit until 2015-16)

NYI - Rick DiPietro ($3.57 million cap until 2020-21. SERIOUSLY!)

NYR - Brad Richards ($6.66 million cap until 2019-20)

Ottawa - nobody

Yay, us!!! - Ilya Brygzalov ($5.66 million cap until 2019-20). I think this is rather dumb, as Briere is the logical first choice.

That other NHL city in Pennsylvania - Marc-Andre Fleury ($5 million cap until 2014-15)

Tampa Bay - Vincent Lecavalier ($7.73 million cap hit until 2019-20)

Toronna - John-Michael Liles ($3.87 million cap hit until 2015-16)

Washington - Brooks Laich ($4.5 million cap hit 2016-17.)

Which, if any, of these big-ticket underachievers might interest Paul Holmgren? I'd be inclined to kick the tires with Laich (who put up 149 points in the 3 seasons before this one), Ruutu and Heatley.

I'd have interest in Heatley, Leino, Volchenkov, and Lecavalier interest me a little. I like Volchenkov but I'd rather see the Flyers go with some of the D prospects they have.

I'm sure Leino would take a huge pay cut for a second chance with the Flyers.

They can't risk him being injured and be unable to buy him out while they can.

Not only would they proactively buyout a still productive star player in Hossa but also deliverately throw away another season that they could just wait and see him score goals while reassessing the situation until the buyout window closes next year?
Does not sound plausible to me... not at all!

Using the same logic you can't sign a player to a new long term contract either because there is always a potential risk of him getting injured and the team being stuck with his contract.

I'd kick the tires around Laich, Richards, and Ruutu definitely. Heatley and Havlat scare me a little too much. Leino maybe for a very, very good price. I don't think there's any chance the Lightning buy out Lecavalier this summer. They'll amnesty Malone to give them some breathing room and give Vinny at least another year before deciding whether to keep him or not.

I'm just gonna say that this buyout situation is rather exciting as it will add some big name guys to the FA mix that could be had on the cheap (or at least way less than their current pay) that could come in on a 1-2 year deal, provide vet leadership, and help the young core grow. The Jagr experiment worked well IMO last year.

I'd be interested in Heatley, Ruutu, Laich or Havlat. Don't want Leino. Heatley on Girouxs wing would be pretty much precisely what that line needs. A big guy who can shoot the puck well from the circle.
