...the 2011 Norris Trophy was given to a player whom that season shouldn't have even been up for the award...now, that guy was Nicklas Lidstrom, who got it as a going away gift from the NHL, so it wasn't THAT big of a deal...except to Shea Weber, who should have won it easily...

For better or worse, points play a big part of it

Subban/Doughty Norris trophies, both of which should of been awarded to karlsson.

went with doughty.

First d-man since leech to go ppg 82 in 82 since leech i think it was

...the funny thing with Swedish Jesus is that both his Norris Trophy wins should have gone to others while he realistically should have still won it twice, with those two years going to others...

Voted Subban 2013, but Lidstrom in 2011 is the one that stands out most for me. Weber got robbed.

I have a bad memory and can't remember much of anything about this season. What was so controversial about Lidstrom's Norris win? The only article I found that mentioned anything about it vaguely referred to him being a minus 2 on the season. However, when you consider he had 39 powerplay points it doesn't look so bad. He put up 14 more points than Weber, while playing almost two minutes less per game. Help me connect the dots please.

Edit-- I was in first year University, no wonder I don't remember anything. That was a busy time.

...you pretty much explained it to yourself; he was basically a PP specialist at that stage and was soo heavily sheltered defensively that he wasn't even Detroit's best D-man that season, imo...Weber was an absolute dominant force that season and the next, Swedish Jesus' first win...it was his parting gift from the NHL for being the greatest D-man of that Generation...

Subban.

Letang deserved that Norris if they were going to give it to someone that missed a bunch of games.
I do think that Letang was the best d-man that year, while also thinking Subban still deserved it - simply because Letang played slightly less than 75% of the season. I don't think an award like this will ever be awarded to a player who has played so little games - but I could be wrong, and haven't checked if that has happened in recent history. So if someone has looked, let me know.

People voting Subban, and then saying Suter should have won, is funny to me. Especially when the issue with the Norris is it being a reputation award. Subban was actually pretty good defensively that year, unlike what you'd have his reputation make you believe.

Suter deserved it if we are going to use a game played argument. Subban missed 7 games in a 48 game season.

If you rae going to use a game played argument. Letang contributed much more to arguably the best team in the league that year in the regular season.

See the edit I made while you were replying. It's not just me more than it is about the arbitrary threshold established as "not having played enough games" that many voters will have. The Norris has kind of taken a "Most valuable d-man" aspect.

One of Doughty (2016) or Burns (2017) should've gone to Karlsson, considering they changed their definition of best defenseman just to purposefully not award it to Karlsson. One season it's all "it's not only about offense, defense matters too!", and then the next season they give it to Brent Burns, who had a whopping 5 point advantage over Karlsson, who just had easily his best defensive season.

In my opinion, he should've won both.

If you don't view any of the candidates as explicitly undeserving, vote for the candidate that you believe won by the narrowest margin over the next most deserving candidate

Instinctively I put PK as my vote but really not sure would have to go back and look at it but PK in an unbalanced shortened season seems about right.

That year was the whole "can't win the Norris if you don't make the playoffs derp derp derp.." but this season has anyone complained about Fox winning the Norris?

Fox winning is proof that that was nothing more than a bullshit excuse. The real reason Karlsson didn't win that year, was because he played for the Ottawa Senators. Nobody watches the Senators. Everybody watches the Rangers. If Karlsson played for New York, or Montreal, or Toronto, he'd have 4 Norris trophies.

I'm not saying it's necessarily right but in 2016 Karlsson had a +/- of -2 whereas Doughty was a +24, it's exceptionally rare for a Norris winner to have a minus season, but I do agree an 82 point season should have merited recognition.
