Who benefited the most ($ wise) from a fluke season / playoff performance?

Mike Babcock?

You could make an argument that the NHL's $8M coach benefited quite a bit from early playoff performance with a stacked roster.

His playoff fortunes largely followed the age and peaks of his Norris & Selke winners and that guy called Zetterburg.

Prior to coming to the Leafs, the Wings were knocked out of the 1st round 3 of the last 4 seasons.

I'm super happy that he's here but how much of an impact does coaching actually make vs talent on the roster? If the answer is not a lot, he's got a pretty big pay day for what looks to be results influenced by great timing.

He shot nearly twice his career average last year, and the 26 goals - fueled by increased PP usage - before was also a career high. He wouldn't have gotten 8 years as a 30 year old without a fluky year of shooting luck.

Well he's been playing for a new team, and if you project his stats this year, it would be 29 goals and 67 points over a full season. It's his new norm with the Caps. He flourished in Washington compared to his days in St. Louis.

Lucic deserves a shout.

no, he doesnt. 2010-11 up to his 1 year in LA

30-32-62 +28
26-35-61 +7
7-20-27 +8 (lockout season)
24-35-59 +30
18-26-44 +13
20-35-55 +26

all while being one of, if not the biggest hitters, toughest fighters and most prototypical power forward in hockey.

A case could be made for Joel Ward, although he did manage to put up one or two nice seasons after his playoff badassery in 2011.

Its a Trap

Yes I’m still here to piss you off
Has nobody said DiPietro? He didn't exactly play well before his massive contract, but he's gotta be the king of getting paid to do nothing. He's still getting paid on that horrific deal by the Isles all the way to 2029.
He benefitted the most from all #1 draft picks just because he has to do nothing to earn money.
He was actually pretty good before his bones turned into jello after 2007. And the contract was signed before the injuries really started piling up. It was a bad contract but not like the others being mentioned here. I mean you’re better off bashing the Islanders for Paying yashin insteal of DiPi.

Whatever! The guy has 21 pts in 26 games and is doing good again this season, and it isn't all on McDavid, otherwise everyone on McDavid's line would be lighting it up, plus the Oilers have struggled this year, so that is awesome all things considered.

Small sample size......but how has he looked since he was taken off McDavids line and asked to Center his own? Maybe extrapolate those figures?

I’ll save you the time looking it up......it’s not good. At all.

Incoming responses about line mates should start piling up.

When you’re a top 10 earner in the league, you better be able to drive your own line no matter who he is paired with.

Just out of curiosity, what are his numbers like as a centre on his own line (Regular season, no McDavid)

Off the wall one, Guillaume Latendresse. Traded to the Wild after years of underpeforming in montreal, was probably on his way out of the league. Proceeds to score 25 goals in 55 games and get 5 million over two years(2009, so 6.6 m in today's cap world equivalent).

Only played another 40 games in the NHL due to concusions.

Cam Ward made a career off 2006.

Not exactly. Ward struggled in the year after the Cup win (as it was his first year as a full-time starter), but he improved year after year and, around the 08-09/09-10 season, he was a top 10/consideration for a top 5 goalie at the time. He also had another stellar playoff performance, but it came at a cost.

During the last playoff series against Pittsburgh, he was run by Cooke (I believe) and tweaked his back, to the point where he was in physical pain standing up straight. But since the choices at the time were an injured Ward or an ice-cold Leighton (he played 1 game out of Carolina's final 40something), they decided to let Ward finish the series.

Over the next few years, Ward dealt with injuries, some freak accidents, other wear and tear deals, but almost all of them can be attributed to Ward playing an ungodly amount of games and facing an insane amount of shots in his younger years, due to a shit defense and no decent backup.

Today, he's simply an example of a lot of potential that was wasted due to circumstances beyond his control.

Another Ward who benefited from a playoff run is Joel Ward. 7 goals and 13 points in 12 games for Nashville. Signs a 4 year, $12 million dollar contract. Not as bad as some of the others but I still thought for his regular season production, he was about $1-1.5 million overpaid.

yah it w

as. his playoffs were decent and he still got a lot of money. besides that he was underwhelming

No. His 12/13 run was excellent. His 13/14 playoff campaign was satisfactory enough relative to his contract and then in 14/15 he had over 100 hits in 18 games and was clearly struggling with illness/injury. It remains to be seen if he ever would lived up to that contract but we won't know because of his MS

a guy with 100 hits in 18 games isn't worth 4 million a season
