Patrick Roy. I think he’d be a way better GM than coach, a lot of his potential trades he almost made with the Avs would’ve been good moves for the future and present of the team. Plus with his uber comeptitve personality he seems like someone who wouldn’t be too emotional in getting rid of the players that won’t cut it.

Vancouver, B.C.
Mike Gillis should be running a team. Yes he mortgaged the future of the Canucks to push for the cup. And no it didn't pay off. But he was one hell of a GM. Better than 1/2 the GMs currently employed.

Mike Gillis didn't do much outside add depth to the guys that Burke and Nonis put into place for him.

Someone from the Leafs brain trust will probably get picked soon. Whether that is Dubas, Hunter or LL

He won GM of the year.

His team won back-to-back President's Trophies with arguably the best post-lockout season in 2011 that the NHL has seen (statistically speaking).

He negotiated some of the best contracts in the league and in franchise history. Two Art Ross + Hart + Lindsay winners to 6.1 mill each with term? Unreal. Prime Kesler (Selke) to 5 mill at 5 yeas. 30 goal Burrows to 2 mill for 4 years. I could keep going.

He made some great free agent signings. Tanev, Hamhuis, Malhotra, Sundin, Samuelsson, Demitra, Lack, Torres (good at the time), Garrison, etc..

He made more good trades than bad. Schneider for Horvat looks pretty good right about now. The Higgins and Lapierre for 3rd round pick trades was great at the time. The Ehrhoff for Patrick White trade was great. Even his bad trades weren't that bad, and were defensible at the time.

His biggest issue was not revamping the scouting department earlier. This partly explains why his drafting was so bad (and continuously finishing top of the league and never getting a high pick outside of Horvat and Hodgson). But if you look at his 1st round picks, they generally drafted the consensus top players (Hodgson, Schroeder, Shinkaruk, Jensen, etc.), so it's hard to argue that they were bad at the time.

Name the top three core pieces or contributors for their cup run that Gills acquired for me please

As already mentioned, Hamhuis was arguably the most important player of the team. Notice how the team collapse coincided with his injury? It's because he was our #1 dman, logging huge minutes, and shutting down the top opposing players. Ehrhoff was also our PP QB, and got injured as well.

You're missing a big point, though. It is incredibly difficult to maintain a competitive team in the cap-era. Gillis had Sedins signed to 6.1 mill, Kesler at 5 mill, Burrows at 2 mill, Luongo at 5.3, and ALL of our defencemen were making 4.5 mill or less. I'm sure you can appreciate that, given the calibre of those players, it's incredible that he got all of his players to buy in and sign cap-friendly deals.

lol, you guys on the east coast.

not only did Mike Gillis do a lot for the Canucks, he did a lot for the league.

analytics, sleep doctors, cutting edge nutrition - Gillis changed the game.

it is crazy to think Vancouver was a forward thinking franchise in a world class city, and now has been reduced to the laughing stock of the league.

insanity.
