Value of: Which teams could be in on Matheson at the TDL?

Not too many teams craving LD as good as he may be offensively.

Maybe DET if they're gonna move Ghost for a prospect/pick/cheap forward?
Then move Maata in July?

But Matheson having term likely blocks one of their own prospects.
Seems like a move made in July but aren't Montreal happy with him?
Why move him for more picks?

You're nearing bubble team stage so go for playoffs next year?

on what planet is his cap hit cheap?
4,8m was a lot back in 2012… We are in 2024 my dude. Dmen with his level of production + skating + experience usually cost around 2-3m more

Because we’re surely not there yet and will only really be able to compete in 2 years once Matheson needs a new contract. Also wasting his best years (also reducing our lottery odds) would be terrible asset management.

Tampa is supposed to be in the market for a LD

paying $5M for a bottom pair LD PP specialists is too much. what team in the league is missing a top 4 LD who would be looking to acquire him at the deadline given he has 2 more years left. You need to factor in plans the next 2 years in prospects coming up. easier to swallow at $2.5M but even then teams arent giving up high prospects/1st round picks for him.

If he was a UFA to be it may be different.

Fair enough, I think you're closer to playoffs then needing another top 3-5 pick but your fanbase knows the team better.

Still think this more of a move made in July/off season. Happy for Matheson carving out a decent career since leaving the Panthers.

Would the 2 extra years not complicate TBs cap space?
I guess they could get MON to retain a bit? Move another D in offseason?

Matheson is a local boy who's proud to play here, even if the team is actually bad.

We need some veterans who are all in about Montreal, to show the way to the younger guys.

Totally agree with this.

I like Matheson and would have preferred to keep him rather than trade for Petry but I'm not sure teams will be queing up for him as I don't think he'd produce quite as much on a contender and the contract length might be a negative for some teams who'd prefer more flexibility.

You must be in the wrong thread... That, or you have never actually watched Matheson lol

For reference sake, he's currently 30th in EV pts. Pretty strong production for a "bottom paid pp specialist"

Just to build on your reply, He's also tied for 8th among defenceman, plays 25+ minutes a night and is 8th among D for shorthanded minutes played. Pretty well rounded player for a "bottom pairing pp specialist"

I think next year is the time to pull the trigger when our D will be more crowded. At TDL or in summer. Would only have 1 year left.

He's too valuable for the Habs right now tho. Can't trade everyone unfortunately, our D is already super young. And I don't think Habs get the return we'd be looking for to make it worth it anyways.

Cap is going up next year and moves can be made if necessary including moving Savard again in the off season. If he plays up to the contract it would be just a business dealing.

I mean, you might not want Matheson for X or Y reasons, but that is a stupid remark

Matheson has as much points as first pair Rasmus Dahlin (in two more games, fair enough but he's also paid 4,875M while Dahlin is paid 11M)

So, what's going on there?

Dahlin is only making 7.2m this year

Should not play 25:25 mins per game. 5th in whole league
more than Makar, Q Hughes, MacAvoy, Theodore…

Should play 22 mins tops.

4th in pp toi. Helps boost numbers.
