The Flames don't seem to be too impressive on paper, yet it seems that they are always in the fight, even last year.

They Oilers seem to be the opposite, not a bad looking team on paper, and they are rarely in the fight.

Would the Oilers be a better or worse team than they are now if we had the Flames coaching structure and process?

Full of goons, and still bad. The Flames started their rebuild already possessing a #1 dman, as well as some vets who brought decent returns. We had nothing.

Far better, Eakins is a lousy coach, the gm stinks, the flames have a guy that knows how to get the best out of a variety of different player types from tough guys to checkers to skilled guys to different types of Dmen.

The Flames are a garbage team propped up by unsustainable stats. They have a better coach, but the wheels will come falling off there at some point this season.

Better but not much better.

When they have 4 dmen better than the Oilers best dman and a goalie that is a legit #1 goaltender (not another back we hope would be a #1). That alone makes you a better NHL team.

But hey not to worry we have picks and prospects we can continue stockpiling

Considering that the Flames our following the build from the net out while the Oiler added two more wingers in Pouliot and Purcell while subtracting a center.....

With the Flames current hockey operations the Oilers would be 3 places higher in the west this season and legit playoff contenders next.

As helpful as having Hartley would be to the oilers, having a defenceman like brodie or Giordano would really change the teams dynamic. Imagine having a good defensive puck mover who can hit hall or Hopkins with perfect breakout pass from their own goal line out there for 25 mins a game. While then going on the pp to QB it.

Flames are getting a crazy amount of production from their blueline. Giordano and Brodie both lead their team in points with 15 and 14 each. Then you have Wideman with 9 points and Russell with 7 points. Thats a total of 45 points from their dmen. Compare that with the Oilers who have Schultz leading with 6 points , Nikitin and Fayne with 3 points each, and then Ference, Petry and Marincin with 1 point each. Thats a staggering difference. Then throw in the Flames stellar goaltending they've been getting and you can see the biggest difference between the two clubs.

I wish we had hired Burke. I was disappointed the Flames got him. Of course we're stuck with Lowe for life.

We'd be better. That's for sure. And then we'd have probably have a new GM who realizes it's time to trade some of the core.

I see Calgary being Ottawa of 2011 when they should have tanked another year to pick up more goodies. This is Calgary year to tank, and a stacked draft year at that. Look at Ottawa chances at the cup now. They will be a playoffs teams for years but will never be a true cup contender.

Where would the Oilers be if they had no former Oilers in Management?

This is the question that should be asked. Coaching is part of the problem, but it's not the whole problem. We have a GM that took our roster from last year (arguably worst C depth in the league) and somehow made it worse. Somehow it appears MacT felt that an 18yr old right out of junior and a severely undersized, career AHLer were the answers to playing in a division that (arguably) has the best C depth in the league (most of them big and play heavy hockey).

Oh yeah, 2 career backups to split goaltending. How are we not dominant?

Why do some Oiler fans fixated on what the Flames do? It's irrelevant. You can compare the Oilers to other teams too.

We'd be a better team but I don't know if our future would be better.

I can see Burke trading Yakupov for some random grinder because TRUCULENCE

We would be around 8-10th in the West with Flames management. Oilers management is a bloody joke.

yeah, if you just swap gio and hiller with scriv/fasth and schultz we are probably a .500 team.

probably....

I imagine if you add a good coach/strategy in there then you're a playoff team.

There is also a distinct possibility that the top 9 is still too soft.
