I think - from observing myself - that it's the frustration of watching us try to score and falling short, of watching a loss in other words, it's sort of built into the viewing experience, the "the thrill of victory and agony of defeat" in the classic ABC wide world of sport lede in . . . so that the more impassioned I am in watching, when we lose then the more irrationally trashing the team . . .

But it's particularly inapt after a shootout loss. We didn't lose last night at all. Oh yeah they got the extra point. We should have ended it in OT. But the fans reaction - including me - to what happens in the extra time far exceeds anything rational as to what actually happened in the game. That goes as to winning as to losing. I am exceedingly positive after an OT win, even if we shat the bed for 59 minutes of regulation time.

Go figure. That's why I try to be tolerant of some of the nutsig stuff on this board after an OT or shootout loss even.

I mean, I’m little cranky about it too. Winning is better.

I definitely try to be tolerant of venting.

I do give pushback when people immediately shit all over the team because of their emotional reaction to us losing (we don’t even have to have lost yet!) and then try to sell that as even-keeled analysis.

But that’s because I’m in a pissy mood over losing and have less tolerance for what feels like whiny BS.

Moneypuck had Schmid at 2.92 xGA. He wasn't the reason we lost. The Eichel goal he had a shot but on a two on one I can see why he planted his right foot. Other than that down one goal he saved a penalty shot and in the shootout stopped the first 3 shooters.

The only reason NJ lost was Hill.
For Schmid, that penalty shot save removed any sort of issues I may have had. Which I’m not even sure I really had any, maybe the Eichel goal obviously wasn’t great but it still is off an OMR. I wonder for VGK, is Hill showing to actually be better than Thompson now that he is getting some runway? His #s are good even without last nights performance. And the issue with him I believe is injury history, not even talent level no?

Watched the whole game and the comment was that taking sharangovich out would derail the PK and the solution to that would be inserting lazar into the fourth line as non of them play the PK if we are worried about the pK. Sometimes reading comprehension is key
None of the fourth line plays the PK?

I've refrained from posting much the last three games, even to defend goalies, which is my MO, bc honestly I'm in stunned awe of this team.

In my history of watching the Devils we've had great players... Marty could make any save look easy, there seemed like there was a 100% chance Stevens would stop any forward entering our zone and take away the puck, Niedermayer skated five feet above the ice...

But outside of Kovy's snipes and breakaway dashes up the ice and Hall's patented zip up the left boards that resulted in either a goal or him crashing into the boards or both, we've never had generational talent up front. That annoying 'cheat code' commercial reminds me we've never had someone like that.

Now we might have three or four. At the same time.

Jack is undoubtedly already the best player we've ever had and is clearly a generational talent who can dictate gameplay every shift.

Nico probably will just be Bergeron or Eliasesque. Not generational but?

Bratt's acceleration through the zone last night was other-worldly. Only macKinnon could top that, I think.

And that leaves Dawson Mercer who is putting on a show. That spinerama backhand made me and my Vegas fan friend drop our beers last night.

It wasn't Schmid's fault last night; he should have had one of those at least, but after that first carom for the Marchessault goal it clearly wasn't going to be our night.

But I'm pretty happy after that loss and getting a point. Still 12-0-2 against the Pacific is wild.

This made me think about when I was 17 about to turn 18 with a late July birthday and all giddy about the Devils making the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Time flies.

Spent the year watching, hoping that Verbeek would get to 50 or Captain Kirk would break 100....it didn't happen but that season was pure magic. Even when Craig Janney walked Daneyko in game 7 of the ECF to end the dream I was still so happy with it all...to this day I believe we would have given Edmonton a far better contest than Boston did in that finals.

Great to know people are getting the opportunity to have an experience like that again.
Getting playoff tickets just prior to the Islanders and Washington series for like 30 bucks just before each round started was nice too.

Of course, I was too late for the Boston series.

I don’t mind loser points because I want the rangers in the first round anyway. Especially after reading through a certian thread in the main boards.

The best thing Vegas did was stymie our speed and system with adjustments for part of the 2nd period.

That’s my biggest concern, or the biggest unknown, going into the playoffs. What coaching adjustments a good team will make against us and vice versa.

We also looked like a well-oiled machine defensively (except when two forwards randomly gave the puck to opposing players) but then later got a little too loosey goosey.

I’m not concerned that it’s hard to score against excellent goaltending performances, that’s always true for all teams. (And we had 3 goals.)

I don't know if it will be a reliable strategy.

Vegas hit everyone, all over the ice starting the 2nd period. It slowed the Devils down. There really aren't much teams heavier than Vegas though. Rangers wont be able to play that style. Canes likely can't. Bruins maybe, but that'll be in the east finals if they matchup.

The problem is that Vegas was gassed after a period and a half of doing that. Their guys could hardly skate and the Devils took it to them for the final 15 minutes.

Oh and Bahl really deserves some love too for his play of late. I really do think the crease clearing and the stuff after the whistle moving people away from the crease is super underrated.

It's small but important gesture to let everyone know this isn't going to be easy or polite.

Bahl has found another gear in his development for sure. Looks really poised out there last few games.

Yes that edginess is noticed here and finally will deter some scrum bs that teams would try over last few years. Happy with his play right now.

Yeah, having these young offensive players including an electrifying young superstar forward locked up for 7 more years is new territory.

People have complained that our late 90s teams weren’t appreciated but 2001 got a ton of buzz. That offense was ridiculous and the media narrative definitely was “this isn’t the old trapping Devils, they’re super exciting! Get on board this fun team!”.

But that team, as constructed, was gone in two seasons. And the team became very defensive oriented and we never had an elite offense again.

The years we were top 10 in Goals For after 1992:
1993-94:
GF 2nd of 26 (306 GF; 3.64 GF/G)
GA 2nd (220 GA; 2.62 GA/G)
1997-98:
GF 9th of 26 (225 GF; 2.74 GF/G)
GA 1st (166 GA; 2.02 GA/G)
1998-99:
GF 2nd of 27 (248 GF; 3.02 GF/G)
GA 6th (196 GA; 2.39 GA/G)
1999-00:
GF 2nd of 28 (251 GF; 3.06 GF/G)
GA 7th (203 GA; 2.48 GA/G)
2000-01:
GF 1st of 30 (295 GF; 3.60 GF/G)
GA 5th (195 GA; 2.38 GA/G)
2022-23 (so far):
GF/G 4th of 32 (217 GF; 3.56 GF/G)
GA/G 7th (163 GA; 2.67 GA/G)

The NHL in the 1990s was a whirlwind of trades in general, and Lou often made it work to his advantage, but never having an offensive stars stick around made the team a tough sell. That’s what made Parise such a heart breaker after those two big career years.

It really does feel like this team can capture more fans. A close friend of my brother’s brought his young Rangers fan son to a game. When he said that while he is (allegedly) a Rags fan, his favorite player is Jack Hughes and they watch the Devils all the time lol.

It was the Kings OT comeback win and he said it was the best game he had ever been to. And my brother bought the kid a Hughes jersey in an attempt to turn him lol.

What a terrific game by Adin Hill, who is an oustanding netminder and will have a great career.

Of course Conte passed on him to draft Mack Black instead, who as we all know is a weak, bush league netminder and can't complete 5 pregame stretches without hurting something. Just incredibly frustrating.

Conte's biggest whiff at the goaltending position since 10 years earlier when we took Jeff Frazee over Jon Quick and picked JF Damphousse and Ari Ahonen in round one in the late 90's.

Nice parting gift from Conte's final draft and last weeks here, just like taking PZ over Barzal, Konecny and Meier in the first round. Pitiful.

Thanks again Conte, wherever you are.

It's just too bad Lou learned from his years of mistakes by keeping Conte around the NJD and was smart enough to not hand him the keys to scouting for the NYb, as they're poised for a very nice future. That wouldn't have been the case with Conte steering the drafting ship.

Went and re-watched the Non-Call on Bratt in OT....

The Vegas announcers were like "Ruff does have a beef..."

Dano is like "It looked like a great play by Karlsson(sp?)"

I'm like "PS calls have been made for far less"

EDIT : BTW, not for nothing but Bratt was absolutely flying in that OT.
