The guy is turning 33.

He is likely to win another Richard Trophy.

He leads the team in goals and points, first time in how many years?

It’s most likely going to be his most scoring season in terms of points since 2010 (crazy)!

Considering his age, his impact on the team and the fact that he’s carrying the Caps this year, where do you rank this season in Ovie’s career?

Top 5 Ovi regular season.
And if (however unlikely it seems) he carries his diminished Caps to a Cup win it's obviously going to be #1

I could see Ovechkin pulling a Raymond Bourque.

Definately, but Bourque was incredibly lucky. Sure Colorado was a dominant team but between key injuries and lacking clutch plays when it matters it's an incredibly hard feat to just get into the perfect team in your last season

Ovie turns 33 in September. To me this season for him will be in the top 5 for his seasons.

I think close to Top-5. In terms of Regular Seasons of course. More or less successful playoffs (at least EC Finals) may put it even higher, at least higher than 12/13 season, that was a miserable post-season run.

God Tier

07/08: 82, 65+47=112. Hart, Art Ross, Richard, Lindsay
08/09: 79, 56+54=110. Hart, Richard, Lindsay
09/10: 72, 50+59=109. Lindsay

Hartworthy
12/13: 48, 32+34= 56. Hart, Richard
14/15: 81, 53+38= 81. Richard
17/18: 73, 44+37= 81. Richard? Hart nomination?

Good ‘Ol Days
05/06: 81, 52+54=106. Calder
06/07: 82, 46+46= 92.

At least with Richard

13/14: 78, 51+28= 79. Richard
15/16: 79, 50+21= 71. Richard

Learning defence
10/11: 79, 32+53= 85.
11/12: 78, 38+27= 65.

Low point

16/17: 82, 33+36= 69.

P.S. Changed it to tiers, that way it's more accurate.

Well, era adjustment is necessary to compare them. Besides, Ovechkin has a superior legacy based on his goalscoring.

Dionne played for one of the worst team in the league. Kings were terrible while Ovechkins Washington has consistently gotten +40 wins most years. If we want a fair comparison era adjustment wont be enough.

I personally also believe Ovechkin is the better player but to say that he is so clear cut better it's not worth discussing is hardly true.

Ovechkin's dominance is independant of the Capitals' level of play. He's had some of his best seasons when the Caps were a bubble team or a team that didn't make the playoffs, and he's had arguably the worst season of his career in the Capitals' all time best season.

As a Caps fans you are bound to be biased towards Ovechkin though. Tell me what you know of Marcel Dionne

He played for the Wings back when they were absolutely terrible and only had a few NHL caliber players. He was on one of the best lines in hockey, the famous Triple Crown Line. He played for the Kings before Gretzky got traded there and he got traded during Robitaille's rookie season.

I believe the Kings gave him a Stanley Cup ring when they finally won in 2012.

I am indeed biased as a Caps fan, but I just feel like Ovechkin being potentially the best goalscorer of all time puts him ahead of a lot of players.

Best season post 2010 thats for sure. Nothing will live up to the magic of his first few years though. Sincerely hope he gets a ring before he hangs them up.

He's definately up there with Lemieux, the Hulls and Bossy in terms goal scoring-affinity. And he actually has a shot at beating Gretzky in terms of pure numbers if he has a long career.

I'm only arguing because Caps fans said he definately is better then Dionne, and I believe that's subjective. I also think he is, but there's definately an argument to be made for the opposite. And entirely too early to say before his career is over.

Ovechkin is having a lights out season this year. He has played reasonably well in his own end- probably the best I've seen him play (which still isn't great but it's better than earlier in his career). He is leading the NHL in goals, he may or may not hit 50 this year. He needs 6 in 9 games. He had three games earlier this month with no points but I think he gets 48 for sure. And he's liable to get 9-12 points in those last 9 games. That would put him at 90 points or above, something he has not achieved since 09-10 season when he had 109 points.

I looked back at his career and the last nine games of each season he seems to usually score around 4-6 goals. But he's done 8 and as little as 3.

Remember this guy started out the season with 7 goals in 2 games. He's had stretches this year too without any points, including a 4 game streak and two 3 game streaks. That's no points in 10 games, yet he may win the Rocket this year and still get over 90 points.

I think this season ranks maybe 5 or 6 in his career. If you want to factor in that he's older and is playing better defense (I use this loosely), I think it's a really good season for him.

I would say 6th-best or 7th-best, behind 2007-2010, 12/13, 14/15. Not sure about his rookie season.
Kind of gives you an idea how good Ovechkin is/was, if this season is around the median in his 13-season career so far.
