Goaltending doesn't win cups, unfortunately.
Correction: One superstar isn't enough to win a cup. A team needs more than that.
1C - Bergeron
1C - Krejci
1D - Chara
2C/1RW - Seguin
1LW - Marchand
1LW - Lucic
1RW - Horton

1C - McDonald
1C - Getzlaf
1D - Pronger
1D - Niedermayer
1RW - Selanne
1RW - Perry
2LW - Kunitz
2LW - Penner
2C - Pahlsson

I don't think the Rangers have ever had such a complete core roster around Lundqvist.
Nope, not even close.

lol not every team or draft is gonna have a Crosby calibre player. Majority of the league won't get a elite player like Crosby. Some teams have some superstars (Tavares, Stamkos, Giroux, Pavelski, Sequin) and others just have some solid depth or a team to take charge. Then theres PIT and EDM who have these elite superstars like Crosby and McDavid. Its a difficult thing to come by

The obvious answer is making smarter drafting moves

Im more curious when the best Hockey player in the world bar none is going to come from somewhere other than canada... I mean Ovie almost had a case for a minute... but eventually one of those special talents is going to be found somewhere else... well if the NHL gives them a fair shake....

Its kind of tragic that you are on hfboards and haven't heard about Jaromir Jagr.

If the Rangers had the cap space and picks, I would throw out that offer sheet to Draisaitl for 9.5m/yr (it'd be worth it too) for a 5-6yr contract. Oilers will not match that, it'd screw their entire salary structure out of whack.

The only thing dumber than the Oilers matching that would be the Rangers offering him that in the first place.

Leon Draisaitl is not an Evgeni Malkin, he's more a Claude Giroux. In that world is that player worth 9.5 AAV?

New York Rangers were know to sign old stars on the decline only to have "stars" on their roster. But that wasn't very good idea. Because also Gretzky wasn't in his prime.

Last true superstar, what can i remember, was Jaromir Jagr.
But also he was there on his late 30s. And only for 3 and half seasons. And, only 1 season was spectacular (123 points) a one was very good (96 points).

When will we see true offensive Superstar in this team?

They should have one, because in New York area it is very hard competition between Major 4 franchises.

The simple answer is never. Crosby type players only come around once in a while, generally a decade or two. Having the first over all pick during that time is critical. When was the last time the rangers picked top 5? The rangers will have a very slim chance of drafting a player who can make an incredibly impact like crosby has unless they decided to actually tank it out for a few years than throw money at the FA pool. Honestly AZ has a better chance of acquiring a generational player, due to how the franchise is ran compared to the rangers.

What exactly makes New York more deserving of a generational prospect over other franchises.?

Nothing, though if you look at all teams in the league, most have had a top 1-2 pick. Ranger had one in the early 70's-late 60's.

You may be too young too remember, but in '94, The NHL was "winning" because the Rangers were.

A lockout and a boring Devil's style ruined all that they had going...

Funny to hear from a fan from a city that won a cup months after the team was relocated to you..

you can find superstars in late 1st rounds, too. example, Giroux. You don't need to be bad and draft in the top 5.

This is called luck. Most of the time you don't. Draft is still up to a lot of randomness.

To some extent drafting is luck, to some extent skill. It's like poker game. You gain an edge, If you are very good, but at the end luck is there too and short-term you might end up loser, even If you are great player.

Let's see how recent teams have acquired their superstar players:

PIT: Crosby (1st OA), Malkin (2nd OA)
WSH: Ovechkin (1st OA), Backstrom (4th OA)
EDM: McDavid (1st OA), Draisatl (3rd OA)
TOR: Matthews (1st OA), Marner (4th OA),
CHI: Kane (1st OA)
TB: Stamkos (1st OA), Hedman (2nd OA)

Hmmm I am starting to sense a trend here, do you see it too?

That's the "safest" way to accumulate top talent. But there are also the Benn, Seguin, Getzlaf/Perry, Karlsson, Giroux, Gaudreau, Tarasenko's of the world.

If we're talking the McDavid/Malkin/Crosby/Jagr tier, that's a different story. There's only 2-3 of those a generation.

McDavid will be a free agent in 2022. NYR could also offer sheet him in 2018 but it's likely Edmonton would sell off their entire roster in losing deals to make cap space to match.

Just an fyi -- McDavid's getting acontract extension this summer...there will not opportunity for teams to OS him in 2018

Plus, with Slates in NY running that show..I highly doubt he gives Gorton the approval to screw the Oilers over like that.

No it wouldn't. LD managed 51 points when he didn't play with McDavid, his ceiling is 70 at most without him IMO.

When I think of NYR I think of free agent destination of choice so they have that going for them already.

They have signed plenty of top free agents over the years (Holik, Drury, Gomez, Redden, Richards, Gaborik etc) they just sign them at the wrong age and time.

The rags should keep some first round picks and they will have a better chance of drafting a star

Henrik Lundqvist was their super star.

On a better team he would have had 2-3 Vezina's to his name.

As a super star in his peak he took them to the Cup Finals and had a tremendous run. You can't expect much more than that from a super star.

If the Rangers could put a better team around him, they would have a Cup. Look at the elite talent past Cup winners like the Penguins, Ducks, Kings, Blackhawks, Bruins etc have had. No Rangers roster has ever come close.
