What's eating Gilbert Grape? I mean Elias Pettersson!

What do you think is going on with Elias Pettersson?

  • 1. He is playing hurt

  • 2. No not hurt, just slumping

  • 3. Baby, diva, trade his ass

  • 4. Who cares, just sign him ASAP

i am beginning to lose faith in pettersson, just like henrik and daniel, and just like naslund

disappears when it matters, despite the downgrade i feel like this team has a better chance by replacing him with someone like sam bennet

sorry, i have been disappointed by Swedish forwards too many years in the playoffs to want them leading the offense anymore

and i can see it written all over the way he is playing right now, you don't get to slump when you make 8 figures, end of story

Don? Is that you?

he had 3 points in 1 game against vegas and when they turned up the pressure he disappeared and had 2 more points in 6 games, but go on

hell disappear just like henrik and daniel did against boston
Ohhh so were cherry picking stats to shit on players now.......

Sam Bennett has 43 points in 65 playoff games BTW, but again, go on........

We have the most stupid fans in the league.
So many cavemen fans stuck in the 80's. :help:

Well brace yourself my friend, the Canucks top 2 prospects are also Swedish Lekkerimaki and Willander. With a Swedish GM, and a Swedish head scout. Were bound to be seeing even more Swedish meatballs in the lineup.

Is the sarcastic thing that you love it, or that he’s xenophobic?
It's perfectly understandable to be xenophobic toward the Alien.

Well for one thing, JT Miller is out top center. That guy is a beast, I'm glad we kept him. I do think he is playing hurt or either just have no confidence right now.

The issue is that we're right back to where we were before Pettersson's big breakout year which is somewhat concerning. Obviously these nonsensical arguments that he's struggling because he doesn't care or is a Swedish creampuff aren't worth anyone's time but Petey's struggles have been enough of an issue that it's not worth scoffing at any and all criticism. Plenty of star players struggle with injuries (i.e. Crosby, Makar, MacKinnon, Kucherov, Stone, etc.) but the nagging aspect of it seems to affect Pettersson more than most.

I don't doubt he's injured at the moment but you have to be able to play through that to some extent. It just seems like it's always excuses with Pettersson – whether it's his wrist or some other mysterious ailment, it's also coupled with moping, poor body language and lapses in effort. It does make you wonder if there's a psychological component to this that throws him off his game when he's not performing optimally.

The guy is ridiculously good and is still putting up numbers but he is certainly one of the more inconsistent stars in the game. I just wish we knew what we were going to get out of him from year to year, which is at least a bit worrisome when we're backing up the Brinks truck for him.

Just reading through some comments in this thread

Holy crap some of you guys …

Has he been disappointing the last 10 games? Yes, without a doubt. Fell down even more than his rookie year.

Do I want to bet against elite talents like some posters here? f*** no

Btw, he’s been gradually getting better the past three games. A breakout game is on the horizon

He'll be fine but wholly frig stop making excuses for the guy. You have a bunch of fans here that just constantly fawn over him think he's worth 14 million x 8 and then the minute he struggles make a million excuses. The same people in some cases that tore into Boeser for 2yrs when he legit had wrist surgery and a horrendous mental health issue. As far as the Sam Bennett comment and anything of the like give your head a shake.....you're embarrassing yourself. Pettersson is a top10C and star. Bennett isn't even a good 2C for most his career

He's not hurt or he wouldn't be playing. He obviously got banged up and that shot off the foot took some of his acceleration agility and ability to lean into his shot out of his arsenal. His body type is a concern for longevity especially if he wants to initiate contact which is fun to watch but not necessary. Everyone plays banged up his body language hasn't been great when he has been

Agreed. He is absolutely not work 11-12-13-14 Million dollars.

He’s a 8-9M dollar player. He has a lot of positives but also a few key negatives. He’s not built for heavy playoff hockey. He goes cold for far too long. He’s starting to look better on the PP and worse at 5 on 5.

That’s not a player you pay 11M for.

His only playoff appearance in his career disagree with your opinion
18 pts in 17 games

it's just fact

The first thing to say here is that these are all situations stats, so Pettersson will look good in percentage for/against stats by virtue of him having played 109:34 on the PP and only 47:49 on the PK thus far this season.

The underlying results have been very similar over the two periods in question. His individual expected goals (4.76 vs 2.97) and on ice expected goals (19.19 vs 16.08) have dropped off in the last 12 games, but that has been offset by more individual scoring chances (22 vs 25) and high danger chances (5 vs 11). The numbers are also similar when looking at production rate (or by dropping the first game of the season vs Edmonton) to give an even 12-12 game split. The defensive numbers are almost identical, with his xGA at (0.054/min vs 0.053/min).

The biggest changes have been in IPP (individual points percentage), which went from 0.75 to 0.47, and in shooting percentage and on ice shooting percentage (both for and against). He went from 21% (both individual and on-ice) and a 0.915 sv% for a 1.12 PDO to 13% (both individual and on-ice) and an 0.855 for a 0.99 PDO.

Why? The short answer is that he has been less lucky in the second split despite roughly the same underlying quality of play. Despite this, fewer Canucks shots are going in while he is on the ice, and he is collecting fewer points on those that do. These two factors have compounded with one-another to reduce his points totals from 24 in the first 13 games to 8 in the last 12.

The good news is that it isn't all due to PDO regression. While the on ice shooting percentage is still high (career is 13%), he is only slightly over his career 17% shooting percentage and is below his 68.5% career IPP. The last 12 games were more normal in terms of on ice shooting percentage, but he just got a lot of "third assists". Account for that by taking his career average IPP and you get 12 points instead of 8 on 17 goals for while he has been on the ice in the last 12 games.

Anecdotally, I think the IPP thing is just a roll of the dice. There have been several plays in the last couple games (while I have been looking out for it) where he was instrumental in a goal but didn't get a point (Lafferty's goal last night was a good example where EP made a good play to find Cole in space, who passed across the point to Hronek -> shot -> rebound Mikheyev -> goal Lafferty). EP is the straw that stirst the drink on that line, so it is just an oddity that he hasn't been collecting points on the majority of its goals lately.

Another obvious factor is the powerplay. There were 14 PP goals with him on the ice in the first 13 games, and 8 in the next 12. He collected points on 10/14 = 0.71% in the first split versus 3/8 = 0.375% in the second split. He generated 1.31 ixG vs 1.02 and there were 9.23 vs 7.37 xGF in that PP time overall. Slight regression in production but a really steep drop off in his individual involvement. Again this has nothing to do with him playing poorly and is just a result him not being one of the last 3 to touch the puck on passing plays that often see all 5 skaters involved at some point.

In short, his play has been pretty much the same all year but the bounces haven't gone in his favour lately. The narrative has been entirely written by people looking at the box-score and not the advanced stats and this matches my eye-test.

There may be some minor reason for concern in that his underlying even strength production is not as strong as it was last year (3.42 points/min vs 3.19), but it has been offset by increased power play production and he is still in the top 15 league wide in even strength points production rate (min 200 minutes played).

I will happily pay 11m if it's 8 years

His only playoff appearance in his career disagree with your opinion
18 pts in 17 games

it's just fact
If you look at Datzyuks 7 year contract for his prime years.

Cap friendly has it as just over 15 percent of the cap. But I think that was the year it was signed not the year the contract started the season after. Because from my own calculations it was 13.3 percent of the cap.

All that is to say it was around 11-12 million in todays cap.

He didn't get an assist on the Canucks second goal last night but his elite vision and pass back to the cross point made that goal possible.

Hopefully whatever he is nursing doesn't became a long term problem but his skillset and drive are there but maybe his body is just one of those types that can't stay healthy and it's not a character thing just bad luck.
