Serious question, can anybody recall the last time a team knowingly traded the first overall pick with a prospect like McDavid available? I believe a few years back Florida traded the number one pick that enable Pittsburgh to get Fleury, but I think they just moved down two spots in that deal.
And occasionally you see the top pick moved in years when there is no clear front runner to be taken.
Even when Eric Lindros refused to play in Quebec they didn't trade the pick. They took him and tried to sign him for a year.
Do you have to go back to LA trading Montreal the top pick that became Guy Lafleur for that kind of deal?
