What does Barrie bring to the Leafs?

From what I've heard about Barrie, he's not the best pure defenseman in the world, but he is rather good on the Power Play and PPK. He's also quite good with puck possession.

What else does Barrie bring to the Leafs that could be of value?

A RHD who is elite at transitioning the puck. Something we've lacked for a long time. He should be a great partner with Muzzin, and hopefully Rielly can carry Ceci into a decent top 4 pairing. Barrie isn't without his faults. He's a smaller-worse version of Rielly but who has a right-handed shot. I wouldn't be comfortable paying him 8m a year, but he should fill a need for us next year. Obviously a guy like Trouba would have been preferable because he would have paired better Rielly, but Barrie should be great with Muzzin.

He brings quite a lot, in my opinion.
1) great transition ability, and from the right side
2) legitimate scoring threat to open up space
3) gives us two strong PP quarterbacks
4) strong passing and offensive ability

Yeah he's not a great defender (although much improved last season), but he's good at pushing the pace and putting pressure on the other team. He can move the puck extremely well and be an offensive force

Offensive minded defenceman that - hopefully more than - helps replace the production lost with Gardiner. As a RHD, his acquisition better allows a LHD to remain on their strong side. Expected to play a significant role on a revamped blueline.

A guy who is very good in the offensive zone as he is mobile and can really fire the puck...A good shooting D man is something we lacked and now we have 3 good shooters in Barrie, Muzzin and Ceci. He will be a great guy to QB one of our PP units.

The offense IMO is just a bonus. The real value in adding Barrie is his 5 on 5 passing and skating ability.

He is elite at moving the puck in open ice. He can make great stretch passes and has very high IQ, hes almost always able to read what pass is the best option at a very fast pace. His smarts combined with his speed make him an option to pass or rush up himself making him a breakout machine.

Hes also very much like Rielly in that he will generate a lot of offense 5 on 5 by joining the rush and making cuts to give his team mates moving passing options in open lanes.

A play that i see him make a fair amount is instead of providing the traditional D to D option for his D partner in his own zone, he will take off like a forward and provide a moving pass option. This can be risky but a lot of times it starts a nice rush.

His defensive game isnt great but he tries to be very aggressive in the corners to win back pucks. The problem is hes just small which makes defending in the NHL challenging. He isnt quite a good defensive d man the way that other small rightys Spurgeon and Ellis are...Hes a little below them in terms of defensive ability but not too far behind.

Agreed. I think this is going to be huge for the Leafs, especially with all of their offensive talent. Years past, you've seen the stretch pass (exception to Rielly, Gardiner, Dermott) and outlet passes in general be turned over, inaccurate, or worst case called icing.

Due to his elite skating and passing abilities, space will open up automatically for others and he will be able to hit all of our talented centres/wingers in stride with a tape-to-tape beauty. This has been a huge key to Leafs' offense, but getting it from the right side of the defense will be a huge weapon to the arsenal. Not that he can't do it from the left either, his vision is spectacular.

Opposing team(s) can't cheat to the left side anymore.

RHD and a rich man's Jake Gardiner. You're going to get some blunders but hes a premiere offensive DMan.

I think he’s a solid pickup.

IMO muzzin replaces gardiner and Barrie replaces zaitsev. Clear upgrade. He may even play with rielly I think they should at least try it see how it goes.

Zone exit percentile last three seasons.

Polak, 3rd percentile
Hainsey, 11th percentile
Zaitsev, 11th percentile
Barrie, 92nd percentile.

Expect Barrie to successfully clear the zone without turning the puck over more in his first season than those three did combined in a Leafs uni.
it's about cerebral players that can skate. the GM sees that.

Zaitsev is so bad, can't believe people defend him

Where’s this stat from?

Curious as to how Ceci ranked

There are many ways to defend. Being faster than most and getting to the puck first to move it is acceptable.
That’s what the Pens did. Always back in the zone a step ahead and gone before you can forecheck. This is a valid strategy. It’s when you get pinned that you have trouble if you aren’t strong.

I posted this before, but not many people know that Barrie is essentially a forward but lining up on defense.

That is because he was a forward all way through bantam/minor midget and then transition to D when he hit the CHL and junior hockey with the Kelowna Rockets.

ie 2006-07 - Victoria - Midget .. 72 games 43 goals 87 points 130 points (at age 16)

He still thinks the game like a forward and loves to score goals and lead the rush up the ice and beat defenders 1-1 with moves you would expect to see from forwards not dmen.

Picture Willy Nylander lining up on defense for the Leafs, but still playing the same style he does now as the expectation to expect from Barrie.

When Barrie is on the ice its like 3 Forwards + Rover + 1 Dman formation. This makes both goalies on the ice nervous simultaneously. Similarly to a PP formation only at ES.
