What do the Sharks need to do to become a legit threat/cup contender again?

Giving Burns that contract is brutal, Basically a NTC. They are stuck with him.

.
That's simply not true. They have plenty of financial flexibility even with Burns' contract. If they don't re-sign these two it's because Wilson decided not to meet their contract demands.

If they start a rebuild or retool what pieces do they need? How old are Couture and JoePa? Do they have any promising young D?

They need a 1C and probably a top line winger. Pavelski is 32 and should be traded if they're rebuilding. Couture is 28 and should be kept unless they can either upgrade or get another valuable player. They should try to move Boedker and trade Ward, Hansen, and Martin at the TDL when their contracts expire (or earlier). That's 2018-19 for Ward and Hansen, 2019-20 for Martin.

The x's can be filled in with some of their young prospects.

1LW - 1C - LaBanc
Donskoi - Couture - Meier
x - Hertl - x
Karlsson - Tierney - x

Vlasic - Braun
Ryan (?) or x, acquisition - Burns
Dillon - DeMelo/Heed

Get younger. Edmonton and Calgary are both young and should be contenders for a while. Anaheim will still be there for a couple of years too. It's going to be tough for the Sharks.

I think the window of this version of the team has closed unless Martin Jones goes crazy in the playoffs.

Yeah, we don't need much but what we need is hard to get without tanking. Which is the problem: unless Thornton comes back and has another great year like 2015-16 or Couture becomes (for a sustained time including the playoffs) the player he was in the 2015-16 playoffs and Jones does the same, we don't look like contenders. But we do look like at least a bubble team so we aren't likely to be able to draft the top line players that we need to compete.

If our broadcast contract weren't brutal and our market super competitive (with at least some fans being fickle and preferring to e.g., watch the Warriors, 49ers, or college football instead of the Sharks if they suck) or if the owner were willing to take a loss for several years while we rebuild, it would be a lot easier to rebuild. But SJ is a mid-sized super competitive market and our owner wants to at least break even with the Sharks so I doubt that he wants to tank (e.g. trade Pavs, Vlasic, Burns, Couture) to get a 1C.

The Sharks looked old and slow against the Oilers and they couldn't even remotely keep up with the Pens speed in their best year. They have some great pieces to build around. My honest opinion is to start getting rid of the older guys and go younger. Don't grabs vets for the bottom 6- go younger/faster.

The Sharks are a good team but when they went up against speed, they couldn't keep up. Pens absolutely destroyed them and Jones was terrific to make sure it wasn't 4 or 5. Oilers, IMO, dominated play and it shouldn't have been a long series at all. Oilers just looked better.

Speed/youth in the bottom 6. Stop charity-signing old players. Move on and move to a younger/quicker team with your new core of Burns (also vet presence) - Jones - Hertl - LC - and your other vet presence... Pavs.

It's unclear as to whether or not the shark's fanbase could survive a tank. This is problematic when it's clear the best way to build a franchise is to tank for 5 years or so.

Sharks entire top-6 was decimated by injuries against the Oilers. Sharks hung in that series and actually outplayed Edm for decent stretches.

The Sharks don't rely on speed, they rely on puck movement, possession and execution. They dominated that in the first 3 rounds against La, Nsh and Stl and lost all 3 phases to Pittsburgh. Not because they were too slow, but because the Pens forwards were great at disrupting their timing.

There are no pieces to build around.
