Speculation: We win a top 3 pick

Imagine Lafreniere with Matthews and Marner.

That line has everything.

Ya it would be crazy to see. The performance bonuses would create a real issue though.

Mind you we would be moving AJ and Kerfoot and likely Dermott for a top pairing RHD and cap space to deal with Lafreniere.

Okay, imagine we get bounced by the CBJ and miraculously end up with any of the top 3 picks:

  1. Lafreniere
  2. Byfield
  3. Stutzle/Raymond/Perfetti/Drysdale
Personally if we win I don’t think the TML would pass up Lafreniere.

The question is What do they do if it’s pick 2 or 3:
  • trade down a few spots and grab Drysdale and hopefully pick up some extra picks
  • Trade for multiple lower first round picks and try and grab a few RHD-Schneider/Barron/Gans
  • Trade the pick to get a RHD already playing in NHL
Sorry absolutely bored at home!!!

You take Lafreniere and try to capitalize on his ELC. Don't rush to trade anyone until the perfect deal is in place.

Probably not top 3 but isn't there that Russian goalie Askarov who looks like the real deal? That would be a real nice asset to add.

I'm really starting to hate that the Leafs probably won't have a 1st in this draft. It really does look deeper than usual. But that depth could apply to whoever the Leafs get to pick in the 2nd round.

Look at this draft prospect, Jack Quinn Jack Quinn at eliteprospects.com, to see how far Nick Robertson has risen since the 2019 draft. Quinn is only 8 days younger and had similar numbers to Robertson in 35% more games played. Rough estimate that Robertson would probably be mid-top 10 in the 2020 draft.

Some notes..

At #1; I draft Lafreniere and seek to trade Marner for a package, including RHD, hope to sign Pietrangelo..
At #2; I probably move down a spot or two, and then select the top forward left. I trade Marner for a package including RHD, hope to sign Pietrangelo.
At #3, I select the top forward, trade Marner for a package, including RHD, and hope to sign Pietrangelo.

I've posted these trades in the Trade board, where I also ended up with the #10 overall pick, and selected Perfetti there, which is about where he's being rated now.

Why do you hate Marner so much

Who said I hate Marner? Why even assume that, or come to that conclusion? Marner is a great player, and he's worth a great deal. Love the player, but I think his cap hit, can be used in ways to benefit the team greatly, especially if we get a very good return for him. The other option to move in Nylander, but I think the odds he outperforms his contract, is greater than Marner doing so, and with the combo of the return, and open cap space, I think we can build a better team that way.

Your obsession with trading a top 5 RW in the NHL is proof this isn't the first time you have suggested this

No, it isn't the first time that I've suggested it. Team success is far more important to me, than the names on the jerseys, although there are plenty of Leafs that I've loved. Asset management, is far different than an obsession, or hate. The ability to make non-emotional decisions, is critical, not only in hockey, but other areas of life too.... try attributing logic, instead of emotion, even if you disagree with it.

It is not logical to trade a top 5 RW in the NHL, good teams do not move 23 year old franchise players, unless that player demands it.

Otherwise doing so would be profoundly stupid and should abd likely would cost Dubas his job, and possibly Shanny's too

Unless that return is sufficient, and the cap space opened up, allows the team to be more balanced, and competitive.

Or if the move allows the team to be more competitive, or if the team can't move past the first round with such players as the core. Franchise player?

Failing to explore options to improve the TEAM, would be profoundly stupid, particularly if one pre-determines narrow boxes within which they can operate. Dubas and Shanny's job is to win the Cup, and if building a more balanced, and overall better team, gets that job done, nobody will care if a 23 year old forward had to be traded, to get that job done. If they can't build a cup winning team, they will surely lose their jobs... of course, a team without Defense, is unlikely to be the cup winners.

It all depends really.

They have been the underdog in all three series, one against the top team in hockey and the other two against a top 5 NHL team with top 2nd half records. The Leafs have also had the 2nd best goalie in every series.

If Andersen craps the bed again do you trade the core or get a better keeper?

You can't trade Marner and end up better, even if you got Seth Jones would be my dream pair Rielly-Jones you still aren't better.

The kind of D need you don't need to move a star to get.

Larsson, Savard, Manson, possibly Risto etc. these guys aren't costing Marner.

We don't need a superstar on D

We just need a good piece

With this weird 24 team play-in format, it seems like the Leafs have okay odds at retaining their first round pick via a couple of different ways if things don't work out on the ice.

Yeah, but if the Leafs got a superstar D, they could very well be a better team than going into the trade. An example of this would be the Chris Chelios for Denis Savard trade.

You trade a player like Marner only when you have a replacement not when you have a potential replacement. Doing it loses franchise players before they reach their full value.

That use to be an Islander philosophy. Luongo to Dipietro.

In this case it would be not even making the playoffs. Which IMO should signal the end of the Shanny-Dubas training wheels experiment.
While I see where you're coming from, I don't particularly like the take. Pending a colossal breakdown, the team was going to make the playoffs before covid. They're up against a team with an identical regular season record.

Where did Pavel Zacha come from?

I think that 2nd line is hurting

Perhaps the 3rd line too, at least on the wing, although I do like the Zacha addition but I'm not sure yet that engvall is a 3rd line guy.

Had the season progressed we wouldn’t have said that. Before the pause they were in battle for playoff spot so it would be overly surprising to see them bounced out by CBJ or lose in the first round.

Our centre depth is meh after losing Kadri. Byfield would fix that in a heartbeat. I also think Tavares should be moved to the wing in a year or two, Byfield becomes the 2nd centre.

Laf is a stud and the best player not much more to say about him.

Leafs should not lose to CBJ though.
