I really don't see it.
We certainly have a handful of nice pieces but I don't see the team as anywhere close to putting it all together.
The defense is the biggest question mark moving forward and to me, it is just a mess. Edler is going to be 35 at the end of this season and a UFA to boot. The team is still at the point where they can not afford to lose him and expect to improve. Beyond Edler, the only real pieces they have moving forward are Hughes, Schmidt and Myers. This just isn't going to cut it if the team expects to contend for the playoffs, let alone the Stanley Cup.
Up front, I like the look of their top two lines however Miller will be 28 at the end of this season with two more years to go until UFA. If the team does not improve in this time frame then I think it is pretty realistic that he leaves and by this point, his best hockey will have already been played.
The bottom six is still an absolute anchor. There have been a few impressive individual efforts out of this group this season however it is still not a strength when comparing to some of the top teams around the league.
And finally, the prospect pool. For such a drafting genius, I really am not all that impressed by Benning's work. Podz will be a likely well-needed addition to this group however beyond this, things get lean very fast. The cupboard is barren as far as defensive prospects that are ready to step up and make an impact. For a team that has been as bad as the Canucks has been the last 7 years, they really have not positioned themselves well to build from within. The lack of depth is, and will continue to be, this team's downfall.
