Yeah we sucked in March

The complete lack of defensive structure bites us in the ass

People can blame goalies all they want, we played like crap for half the month
Part of the poor defensive structure is having not consistency in net. Its easier to play when you have confidence in your goaltending. Easier to make a play if you know its not going to end up in your net.

It really has been a sad and disappointing end to the season. Going out with a whimper. Cant wait for a new GM.

Turns out all the people who looked at the schedule to close out the season and figured it would be near impossible for Ottawa to get in were right.

Which one of these excuses shall we choose?
It was their record in November
It was the injuries
It was bad coaching
It was goaltending
It was the defense
It was lack of forward depth
It was their road record
It was their record against the West
It was Pierre Dorion
It was bad luck
It was poor even strength play
It was the medical staff
Blah blah blah

They didn't make it, just like everyone thought at the start of the year. Will make noise this season but making the playoffs was still going to be tough. Nitpicking that game against Chicago is not the reason, every NHL team loses against weaker opponents.

Going back to the schedule, if you broke down every teams hot and cold streaks throughout the year, 90% of those streaks can be attributed to strength of schedule. Sure Ottawa could have won a game here and there to get their asses into the playoffs, but out of those 16 games where they went 5-8-3, 12 of them were against teams ahead of them in the standings. Of the 4 other teams, only one of those games was in Ottawa.

It was a fun season, best in years. Would've been nice to get in to the playoffs, but they're not quite there yet.

When your 2nd line has 38 even strength goals and combine to be -85 while not getting any offence in your bottom 6, that’s a problem. That’s not a coaching issue.

Batherson 7 even strength goals -37
Debrincat 16 even strength -28
Pinto 15 even strength goals -20

Let’s re-sign Debrincat for 8M and run this shit back.

Losing these trades in the offseason really hurt us. Depth and lack of experience and realible players for the coach for plug holes - Ottawa was horrid playing key moments, just just wasn’t there, and neither were the goalies.

All negative value trades:

TB:Paul
Ott:Joseph

Wash:C. Brown
Ott: 2nd round

Minn: Gus
Ott: Talbot

Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don’t make.

I’m not suggesting this fixes everything but having Norris rather than rookie Pinto in that spot likely greatly improves that line effectiveness all over the ice, including defensively.
Again not a total fix, Batherson was indeed completely off his game for a lot of the year so he definitely needs to come back next year with his head screwed on right for that line to turn it around.

Batherson needs to turn it around for sure but what in the world makes Debrincat worth 8M.

So it turns out we did play meaningful games in March after all. We just f***ed it up. Mission accomplished.
Lol good way to put it. They did play meaningful games, at least a few, they just lost most of them.

Technically meets the goal since DJorion didn't specify actually winning said games.

Starting with the game in Chicago, an 8-5-3 record would have got it done. That would have them tied for a playoff spot right now. Instead, they went 5-8-3
Starting road trip with Belleville goalies for most of the rest of the year, realized it wasn’t likely to happen, still cheered the boys on though.

Dang I thought we were done with Warne.

If nothing else, DJ needs to be fired for squandering such a great opportunity to get into the playoffs.

yeah…. It was 100% DJSs responsibility that Talbot missed three month of the season, Forberg blowing out his knees, Norris re- injuring himself, Chabot being lost for the season, Chychrun being lost for the season, Brassard breaking his leg and all the other injuries….DJS is to blame….

We lost crucial games before Chabot and Chychrun's injuries

In a bad year he will get close to 30 goals. In a good year he will score over 40. This year with scoring up there will be only 15-17 guys score 40. Goals = $$$$$

Regardless the team doesn't play good defense and that is all on the coach. He needs to go.

He averages 22 Even Strength goals per 82 games over his career and he would likely be on PP2 next year behind Brady, Stu, Batherson, Norris and 1 of the D. 8M is a lot for a guy that scores 1/3 of his goals on the PP.

So it seems you value Batherson over Debrincat ? DBC is only 4 months older and averages .278 ES goals per game compared to Bath who averages .161 ESG? That works out to 10 more ES goals per year and possibly an extra 2 wins. Also for the record, Batherson scores 41% of his goals on the PP where DBC scores 33% of his goals on the PP.

Batherson makes 5M not 8M. I’d move Batherson or Debrincat but I still don’t want to pay Debrincat anywhere close to 8M.

- 7 goalies used this yr, two rookies finishing the yr just when we needed NHL goaltending
- 7 rookies playing in the lineup at the time of the yr when you need wins & a number of your best players are injured
- needed some saves tonight, a number of weak goals, goaltending is killing us
- lots of fireworks tonight, good to see a young team stand up for each other, could have used a couple more tougher guys in a game like this
- pretty good yr, very entertaining at times, not so much at others, lots of positives to take away for next season & some things they need to work on, all in all this run since January has been pretty good & they had their chances but fell just short

The Dorion story

Imagine if he never made :

- Zibanejad trade
- Duchene trade
- DeMelo trade
- Murray trade
- Gustavsson trade
- Paul trade
- Brown trade

There's plenty more (like Stepan lol) but those are the ones that hurt the most

The Zibanejad-Brassard-Gustavsson-Talbot arc is hilarious and almost reads like a tragedy.

He trades away the very piece that might have slightly redeemed him from one of the worst trades in NHL history.

And he gets rid of that piece in the EXACT same type of mistake!

Zibanejad and Gus out Brassard and Talbot in lol

i dunno man, sure the Zibby Brass trade was awful, but he traded Brass for assets, and then eventually signed him again. Key asset management, Dorion is thinking 12 moves ahead

For me, the frustrating part about not making this years playoffs is missing a chance at facing the Bruins.

Historically good team we matched up very well against.

But I think the players feel that to and will ultimately use that as motivation for next season.
