I was at training camp in 2007 when Grigorenko came over. Somewhere I still have a notebook with extensive notes I took. But the gist of it was that he was still very much physically limited. He couldn't keep up with other players, he was winded very quickly, and was last in any drill having to do with speed. You could certainly see the skill, but he was nowhere near NHL speed. He stuck out like a sore thumb against guys 1/10th as good as him. After that camp, I was pretty sure he'd be going back to Russia. Because even though I didn't see any of those 5 Griffs games, I don't have much doubt that he was falling behind in the AHL as well. It wasn't just his rebuilt leg that hindered him back then, he also had that lung embolism he had to get over.

I've read accounts in the past that it took him another 1-2 years after that camp to get up to reasonable pro hockey pace. And when you look at his stats in Russia, that seems to jive. He really didn't start putting up points until the 2009-10 season. By then he was surely good enough for the AHL and, who knows, maybe could have pushed for an NHL job. But he was 27yo at that point, that ship seemed to have sailed.

Anyway, hopefully Wallinder fairs better in NA :naughty:
Jaster thanks for sharing that information it was quite informative.
There will always be in my mind what might have been if not for that accident. However the most important thing which I know you agree is that he survived. The fact that he played any hockey at all after that was impressive.

I wouldn't be surprised if AlJo is good enough and seasoned enough to break camp with the Wings next season, but unfortunately for him the depth chart is not very favorable, unless Yzerman makes some moves. I suspect him and Wallinder will both be in GR to start the season. I like Sebrango, but he's waiver-exempt for another 2 years, and I don't see him being in the equation until around that point.

Unless Yzerman does make moves, I think our D to start the season is looking like....

Walman-Seider
Maatta - Chiarot
Ed - someone RH who is hopefully good for Ed

Lindstrom will either remain a depth guy who rotates in, or be in another organization.
Agreed that was what I was envisioning for defense next season. I think a veteran stay at home defensemen would match best with Ed.

I remember when that accident happened hearing that it was really "bad." I feel like I didn't realize just how close to death he was until later on. But yeah, glad he pulled through, and super impressive he went on to have a long pro hockey career.

Too many guys in recent Wings history who qualify for that "what might have been." Vladdy, Fischer, Grigs. Sucks.

I remember specifically where I was when word broke about his accident. I was hoping he'd pull through and recover the way Kozlov did, but yeah, no dice.

I've been a massive fan of albert johansson from the start. I just get the feeling he will be the odd man out. He not a special enough skater and passer to make up for the fact he's not a stereotypical yzerman defensemen.
I would maybe agree with you but I do think the one big thing he has going for him in the organization is that lidstrom raves about him. That will go a long ways.

This is where extending both Walman and Maatta was curious. Clearly Yzerman feels the LDs in the system need some "over ripening".
Seems Ike AlJo and Wallinder are certain to be in GR at the start of next season.

Will be very interesting to see how the D pairs shake out over the offseason. A vet RHD will almost certainly be brought in from somewhere.

True. But Yzerman has also said he is seeing great things from AlJo and said he may be overshadowed by Edvinsson but AlJo deserves some praise too.

He said that in some intermission or commercial break sometime in the past month or two.

I know the system/coaching in GR is a joke, but I have started to question his overall IQ now.

We better find a way to sign a UFA RD or trade for one so that is not our middle pair. Otherwise I will be very grumpy.
I could expect both will happen.

Yzerman will sign summer UFA RhD.

And at some point, he'll trade one of the younger lefties for a righty. But we'll see some seasoning of the kids before that happens.

I think you are thinking of Edvinsson, his low IQ is attested by Scouching
I quote:

His decision making, puck handling and offensive power are a bit questionable. He is good defensively, using his stick and his skating ability. Shows flashes of high ceiling. Wildcard with the puck. Bit of a risky pick. I’m curious about the raw potential in Simon Edvinsson’s refined defensive talent and if he can learn to manage the puck with more confidence and consistency. While he is not the flashiest player, and certainly not without issues, Edvinsson is a player that adds defensive stability and offensive potential that could be a great add to the massive stable of future talent in grey and black. He's got strong defensive acumen more often than not, and if his puck management comes along and he gets more comfortable surveying the ice and executing his decisions, he could be great. Edvinsson's game has certainly settled down as the year goes on. He's a player who can be a ton of fun to watch until he isn't. His puck management needed to simplify far more often, and that seems to be happening, but he's unafraid to attack the neutral zone with skill and power through his skating. His ability to shut down defensive transitions is highly underrated, his ability to shut down defensive transitions is highly underrated. Risky, absolutely. Stash him in Sweden for a few years and continue to work on his fundamentals, and there could be a really interesting two-way defenseman. Offensive game is held back by his decision making and puck management.

GRIFFINS SIGN WILLIAM WALLINDER TO ATO

March 30, 2023
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins on Thursday signed defenseman William Wallinder to an amateur tryout.
Wallinder was selected with the 32nd overall pick by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. The 20-year-old on Monday was also signed to a three-year entry-level contract by the Red Wings, beginning in the 2023-24 campaign. Wallinder just finished the Swedish Hockey League season with Rogle BK and totaled 26 points (7-19—26) in 50 regular-season games, which tied for first among U21 players in the SHL. Throughout two SHL campaigns from 2021-23, the Solleftea, Sweden, native amassed 11 goals, 34 assists and 16 penalty minutes in 97 appearances. A season ago, Wallinder registered the most points in the SHL by a junior with 19 (4-15—19) in 47 outings. At the 2022 World Junior Championship, the 6-foot-4 defenseman helped Team Sweden earn a bronze medal when he recorded three helpers in seven games. During the 2021-22 season, Wallinder was named the Swedish Junior Hockey Player of the Year when he totaled 19 points (4-15—19) in 47 SHL games and four points (1-3—4) in seven contests in the J20 Nationell.

I don't put much stock in what Scouching and the other wannabe scouts are saying. They are more wrong than right.

Now that Wallinder has made it over to GR, does Yzerman leave him on his off side, or try to transition back to LD?

Imo, he played a lot as LD with a righty partner for Rögle. Some games on off-side with different partner, but there hasn't been anything long-term change. It's nice that he can handle both sides.

I think he should be paired with Johansson at GR, and find it out which one of them is better (or less worse) on off-side. Try both ways.

Wallinder - Johansson
Johansson - Wallinder

With Edvinsson's injury, I think it is a good chance Johansson starts in Detroit.
