First thing I notice is @ted1971 is one of the very few to vote Lemieux outside of the top 5. That's not altogether that big a deal as we've seen such opinions before. What I find surprising is that you chose to have Beliuveau ahead of Lemieux....while initially having Beliveau at only #7 in your initial list.

What made you make Beliveau jump from 7 to 4? Was it a case of Lemieux going down a lot for you, or Beliveau going up a lot? Most people who break up the usual "big 4" usually already feel very strongly about a certain player or other breaking it up - it doesn't seem like this was the case here.

I had a strong hunch that it was @ted1971 's. No issue whatsoever.

I was about 90% certain it was @Dennis Bonvie 's list. Ugly list as far as my personnal appreciation is concerned (Shore!! Clapper!! Brodeur!! Nels Stewart!!!), but no issue whatsoever at screening, and ultimately the kind of list that we just have to agree disagreeing.

I was about 99% certain it was @pappyline 's list. Again, no issue as far as screening is concerned. Thought it was really light on goalies, but then again, 75% of the lists were light on goalies according to me, and pappy was far, far from the worse offender in that regard. Not pointing anyone here, Mike.

Mario while great, I felt that Beliveau as a leader surpassed some of Mario's accomplishments. I remember at the time for the 2nd round, the argument for Beliveau was far too much and was able to overtake Mario because of it. The purpose of this project is to educate and inform, and this was one of several cases in which my 2nd round vote differed from my original list.

Yeah no issues with your 2nd round vote differing from your first round list of course. People who break up the big 4 tend to be so set in their ways and so passionate about why - i just found it intriguing to see that you had someone go from the 7th spot all the way to 4, rather than expected 5 to 4, or even already having Beliveau at 4 in round 1 and sticking to your guns.

As for Clapper, yes I ranked him the highest at 35. But you ranked him lowest at 120. Since Dapper Dit came out ranked 74th, it appears you out uglied me there.

TBH I don't understand how can anyone rank Gretzky below both Orr and Howe. You could argue peak Orr over peak Gretzky (even though I strongly disagree), but there is no question Howe's peak is inferior to both. If you value career and longevity, you can put Howe above Gretzky, but Orr would be a distant third in this triumvirate. Putting Gretzky at #3 is simply indefensible. Of course, it's better than putting him at #7, but that's straight-up madness.

April 10th, 1982. First round of the playoffs. LA upsets the Oilers.
Key game 3. Miracle on Manchester. Oilers lead 5-0 after 2 periods. Lose 6-5 in OT. Watch how bad Gretzky is defensively, especially on the tying goal.



Older participants watched and remember this game and other examples of Gretzky playing poor defensive hockey.

I missed the memo when the list became "Top 100 Defensive Players of All Time." But even on that list Lemieux and Richard would not be higher than Gretzky and his obscene number of shorthanded goals.

Although, seriously, was Orr a better player than Gretzky after the age of 26? Or was Howe a better player than Gretzky when Gretzky beat him in every metric except two way play and physicality? Was it Orr or Howe that set 61 NHL records?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say, no, Fedorov a better player than Howe & Orr is not just as valid.

Seriously, after the age of 26 Bobby was pretty much a cripple.

Its these types of silly arguments that hurt credibility.

I just find it funny that of all the places to want to hash out Gretzky vs Orr, this seems like an odd one...like drinking a cup of coffee in your guest room...you can...but why...?
