Tampa drafted Hedman 2nd overall and stamkos 1st . Blackhawks had Toews 3 and Kane 1.
I don’t think you tear it to the ground and go to the cap floor but the idea that you can get stars other ways is just not happening. It’s luck, and it’s being really f***ing bad. Toronto and Edmonton sucked for a while and have made bad decisions and gotten unlucky sometimes too. It’s not like they haven’t put themselves on the cusp of winning. It took Edmonton a long time but they’re here now. Luck is involved. They’re still relevant now. Arizona, Buffalo, these teams aren’t just bad because of one single thing
It's not one thing for sure, it's the many moves different from some rebuilds and real tearing down ones. You can see trends if you actually follow them.
Tampa and Chicago got high picks... did they get them the same way Toronto, Buffalo, NJ, several others did? Having nobody elite or no solid base of talent in their 20s when your stars join a club... always leads to more losing for half a decade.
They are on the cusp of winning? I think your view of that is well off when those 2 teams you're talking about have 1 playoff series win in the last 5 years both since acquiring those winning pieces. It's not just about being smart or lucky after you get those picks it matters how you get those picks too and how you construct the roster that potential star joins.
How did LA get good potential stars, yet they still have talent I'd put them on a better track than many other current rebuilds.
I've smart element both Chicago and Pittsburgh had in their favor that also seems always forgotten by the hype of the new fast young team... build the defense first, hopefully all the Vlasics and D men drafted the last 3 years can have some guys in a good spot in their mid 20s when th3 Hawks get another potential star or 2.
