He has been the 2nd best D all year.

And that's why our D sucks. If Victor Mete is your 2nd best blueliner you're in serious ****ing trouble.

He was our 3rd best D I'd reckon last year. We finished with 98 points. Not like our D was fantastic last year but it's not like we were an offensive juggernaut. 98 points 9/10 is a playoff team. Hell you can win your division with 98 points.

I wouldn't say 'serious ****ing trouble'. I'd say we have a mediocre D. The guy's been playing a pretty big role for us for over a season now and we're not exactly in 'serious...etc.'

I think people just need to realize the kid's pretty solid. Now to be absolutely clear I'm not saying I wouldn't love a legit top pairing LD. It would make a world of difference. Or that Mete's a bonafide stud right now but as far as 21 year old D you can do a LOT worse.

I get what you're saying but I just think it's a bit hyperbolic. Seems like Weber's doing better of late. But sure things can go south pretty quickly. The East is tight and will likely be so for the rest of the year.

Fun facts:

Leads all Canadiens’ defencemen in goals.
Has played more games and scored more goals than all 2016 4th rounders combined.
Has played more games than all 3rd rounders of 2016 combined.
Top-15 in games played by 2016 draftees.
Top-20 in points of 2016 draft class.

All of this means nothing, but hey... #FeelsGoodMan

If Mete reach 5 goals and 25-30 points, I will be more than happy.

He's got the wheels to get the chances. I just hope he's working on his offense a lot. He's not yet doing enough with his chances.

I praise him for putting in the work on his defensive game first. But I think it's time to practice different offensive scenarios: he creates a lot of odd man rushes. I hope the coaches are taking him through what to do with the puck and without the puck on 2 on 1's, 3 on 1's, and 3 on 2's - and breakaways!

he gets one of these a game, but doesn't really seem to know what to do.

Discuss the offensive dynamo that is Victor Mete.

You jest, but watch him turn out 30+ points seasons year after year from now on.

That said, I find that Mete's overall arsenal of shots and release sucks 99% as much as it did the years prior.

The difference is that this year Mete's started getting closer to the net, in more high-danger areas, before shooting and using his below-average wrist shot more instead of his god-awful slap shot, which has contributed to him being more dangerous offensively and actually scoring goals instead of seeing his shots easily blocked or deflected out of the play, something I had come to affectionately refer to as the ''Mete Special'' (that and getting your first ever goal called back).

I suspect that we'll see Mete start getting more comfortable offensively out there and take more chances, which will probably mean an uptick in production (and in not ever going through another 127 games without scoring a goal again).

Jokes aside, I wish Mete continues playing well for us, thrives in our organization, and continues bringing in that spark, that enthusiasm of his to (and off) the ice every game.

Cheers to everybody here, may your sleep be good and deep.

Very, very impressed with him lately. He's showing more and more potential offensively. That rush yesterday was great to see.

If Montreal can get him 3 or under, even on a 2-3 year deal, it would be a pretty great deal. Even if you ignore his offense, his play and impact justifies more.
really, a 2 years at 3M a year would be a win for you ?

you offer Mete a 6-7 years MINIMUM ( something similar to Girard but less money) he is part of the full rebuild and he is finally taking big steps defensively this year, one of the best 22 and under D in his own zone atm.

2 years make zero sense

That's an option too. But if we're working on the caveat the poster I was replying to made ("Right now I wouldn't pay him over three") then short term is the only option. And he's likely not going to be much more expensive in two more years.

Lets also be realistic. It takes two to tango with long-term deals. you can't just say that you're going to offer any player a 6-8 year deal. Negotiations should be collaborative, not starting from a demand.

You realize Chiarot is paid over three?

If we base our RFA value on what our GM is willing to pay free agents , we are going to have a bad time...

Last I checked we are paying nearly 5M for a bottom pairing AHLer with 2 more years to go after the current season is completed...:help:

He is clearly gaining momentum and has extra confidence as a 21 year old this year. It's impressive if you ask me. He looks like he is 25 already in terms of reliability and how comfortable he is.

On pace for 27 or 28 points and production heating up lately. Can he produce 30+ pts this year? I assume most say no?

It is absolutely not meaningless. Either make the team better or trade away veterans to get better picks.

Ya can we not compare ourselves to the Bruins? They know how to draft and develop players even with their terrible 2015 draft. We have drafted no top 6 players/top 4 dman outside the top 10 with Bergevin as the GM.
Mete is a top-4 dman, drafted 100th overall
