So many caps and pens fans don't understand the expansion draft on Twitter. You got caps fans calling for maclellans head and pens fans laughing: the reason? That the caps didn't protect Tj Oshie

Thread on the trade board about why Tom Wilson is being protected. Summary:

Most fans: he's a tough hockey player all the other teams want
Pens fans: he sucks

My favorite part was that pens fans were saying that we messed up by not protecting Schmidt and exposing johansson

That rival fans hate a guy like Tom Wilson is evidence enough of his value. If he really was a scrub they wouldn't even know his name.

I don't like that the expansion drafts results are being tied to the awards ceremony but whatevs. I just think its a unique marketing opportunity lost. Maybe the ceremony in previous years got poor ratings and they are trying to bump ratings for future years.

I like Willy but if there's one fanbase that can lecture us on our failures... it's them.

Being fans of a team that's won Cups doesn't make them unbiased or skilled evaluators of talent.

Still can't believe the Caps protected Johansson? How many more playoff loses will it take to realize they have too many of the same player?

He was good and was part of the best line this postseason. Also he's one of the few net-crashers on the team so no, he's not one of "many" similar players.

Lies, posturing, whatever we call it - he should definitely kick tires on guys he doesn't want, as someone else may want him via George.

The only reason to not use deception, is he is on the clock, and will likely run out of time before every option is fully explored and worked out.

Do you still think he will try to tank / finish as one of the worst 3 teams? I still see him needing to compete right away.

Will their owner have deep pockets, or will he be a value guy? If he opens his checkbook and players are willing to go to Vegas, he can certainly land a few UFAs.

I expect 3 years of poor play and subsequent stockpiling. Those tickets will still sell to Casinos no problem IMO.

Yeah there is a ton of cash and a ton of folks that will get comped tickets. Vegas is all about glitz glamour and entertainment, so I think it leads to pressure on the org to put on a good show, sooner than later. Maybe more than any other city.

I stick to my prediction, that Vegas will be vying for a playoff spot come March. I think a tell will be if he inks a big name free agent. It will be an interesting next few days.

Id love for them to not take Fleury....that would be somewhat hilarious. They could grab Kuhnhackl or Rust.

Roll with Mzarek, Grubi, and others.

I doubt it actually happens.

Yep just say no to MAF. I am pissed that MAF had a decent playoffs, which increases the likelihood he gets taken.

Maybe McPhee does us a favor, or hates Pitt as much as we do. But it would be so us, for McPhee to do them a favor and give them cap relief.

Hey I got McPhee's fax number being robocalled non stop. I set it to quit in 3 days.

With all the goalies available, I really don't think there is a good reason to take Fleury over Rust, unless Pittsburgh gives Vegas a reason to.

If i'm building a new team, i'd much rather have Petr Mrazek as a starting goalie rather than M-A Fleury. Although Mrazek did have a down season, and Fleury's stock propably went up, there is still a huge age difference. Mrazek is just 25-years old and has 154 NHL games in his resume already. Really good stats in the (small sample size) Playoff -games he's played, and apart from this season, his regular season stats are very good for a goalie of his age.

Besides, you can get a better skater from the Penguins that you'd get from the Red Wings.

I get it from a marketing standpoint. Three time stanley cup winning goalie with a big smile to sell to the non hockey fans in the market.

And he is still a really good goalie.

But...

Yeah.

On the plus side, I can't imagine that the expansion draft results stay "secret" until the actual awards ceremony. It's 2017. They're going to get leaked one way or another as soon as they're filed that morning, right?
