Oilers and Sens make out like bandits here

Ottawa would have to retane on Ryan 25% and the Oilers would have to retane 15% on Lucic, cancel out Vancitys retention and is more reasonable

Edmonton:

In: Backes, 15% on Lucic
Out: Lucic, 2nd rd pick

Ottawa:

In: Eriksson, 25% on Ryan
Out: Ryan

Vancouver:

In: Lucic at 85%, Edm 2nd rd pick
Out: Eriksson

Boston:

In: Ryan at 75%
Out: Backes

I’d do the retention on Lucic contract. I feel Backes would serve a greater need being our 3 center

Ryan is the best player in the deal IMO, both now and going forward, so unless the saved money is going towards resigning key players I wouldn’t do it

Actually I change my mind, took a look at his buyout numbers. Good trade for Edmonton.

You don't buy him out. You pay his $3 million bonus on 7/1. He then is due a total of $5 million in real cash over two years (average of 2x2.5). A non-cap team would love Backes leadership in the bottom 6 at 2x2.5.

Edit: which is why its dumb for Boston to move him until then. He goes from a negative asset to actually useful for his pay once the Bruins pay that bonus.

If I’m taking on Lucic and retaining on Eriksson I’d want more than a 2nd round pick.
Better to stick with the devil I know and just ride Eriksson out until the expansion draft and put him up on it. Plus there’s no guarantee Eriksson even plays much after getting his July 1st 4m signing bonus coming up leaving like 8m or something on the remaining years. Much easier to be rid of than terrible Lucic

So Boston is trading an under performing Vet for...an under performing vet at a higher salary and more term on his deal?

What the hell is this?

If Boston is moving Backes, it's to shed salary, not take on more salary and term.
