And is drafting a player in the 2nd round, signing him and having him sit in the ECHL for three years any less of a black spot? The player's still as much of a bust either way. That 2nd round pick is a sunk cost. It's used up regardless. Don't compound the issue by signing a player you don't see as having any future just to save face about not having an unsigned 2nd rounder.
For the record, I don't have any particular opinion one way or another about whether they should sign Karabacek. I don't watch him play. If they do sign him, though, it had certainly better be because they think he can contribute at the NHL or even just AHL level and not because "why not?" or because he was a 2nd rounder.
Worst case scenario that happens---maybe it doesn't.
I think there is more pressure to sign a 2nd rounder, than if he was a 5th rounder.
I look at a 2nd rounder as you drafted a 2nd rounder because you thought he could make the NHL, you draft 4th-7th rounders and say WTF lets see if something happens here.
I haven't followed him all that closely either so I don't know why all this talk of not signing him is about.
The way I look at it is you try to sign 7-8 players for the AHL/ECHL each year. This isn't counting players like Eichel who just goes to the NHL right away.
If Buffalo is expecting to sign more players than normal for 17/18 season. in part so they aren't exposed in the expansion draft so they want to save the contract space--then that fine.
