Updated 4 days ago by Jordan McAlpine
Oct 20, 2022

USHL writer Jordan McAlpine delivers his power rankings every other week throughout the 2022-23 season.

1. Chicago Steel / Last Ranking: 1
Record: 5-3-0-0

The Steel continue to live up to their preseason expectations and the top team hasn’t changed since FloHockey’s last USHL Power Rankings. Chicago’s potent offense scored 12 goals against a talented U-17 USNTDP roster and the Steel still lead the USHL with 38 goals - eight more than Lincoln. ...

2. Fargo Force / Last Ranking: 4
Record: 4-1-0-1

Up two spots from the last ranking, the Force have battled with Lincoln atop the Western Conference. Fargo currently is second in the West, but the Force have a five-game point streak - the longest current streak in the league. That streak includes four wins and an impressive 5-1 win at Sioux Falls last time out. ...

3. Lincoln Stars / Last Ranking: 6
Record: 5-1-0-0

The Western Conference-leading Stars have been on roll the past two weeks and have won three straight. Lincoln swept a home-and-home with Tri-City last weekend, both by 6-3 finals. Tri-City was leading the conference at the time. ...

Interesting situation here.... From the Lancers viewpoint

It almost doesn't make sense the league wouldn't allow teams to at least fly to and from the showcase. That is common practice in the NAHL for teams to get to Blaine, MN.

A couple of observations:
• NTDP looking strong early. I'm used to seeing them way down in the East standings, using the USHL games as training opportunities rather than actually racking up wins & standings points.
• Defending champs Sioux City bringing up the rear in the West. Oh, how the mighty have fallen (so far).

USHL Power Rankings: Lincoln Unseats Chicago On Top

USHL writer Jordan McAlpine delivers his power rankings every other week throughout the 2022-23 season.

Welcome to FloHockey's bi-monthly power rankings for the USHL. Find out which of the league's 16 teams rise and fall over the course of the long regular season.

1. Lincoln Stars / Last Ranking: 4

Record: 10-3-0-0

For the first time this season, a team other than Chicago occupies the top spot in FloHockey’s USHL Power Rankings. The Stars - winners of four straight - are 8-2-0-0 in their last 10 and have taken 20 of a possible 26 points this season. Lincoln is a dominant 6-1-0-0 on home ice and there’s something special brewing in Nebraska’s capital city.

Their 53 goals are the second-most in the Western Conference, while they've allowed 30 goals – the fewest in the USHL. Cameron Whitehead (Vegas Golden Knights) has been excellent between the pipes and the Stars have gotten contributions up and down the lineup. Six Stars already have double-digit point totals, led by Mason Marcellus. Marcellus is seventh in the USHL with 17 points.

2. Chicago Steel / Last Ranking: 1

Record: 9-5-0-1

The Steel drop one spot this week, more so as a result of Lincoln’s stellar play. Chicago still sits atop the Eastern Conference with 19 points and the Steel have earned points in seven of their last 10.

Chicago leads the league with 72 goals - 14 more than the next closest team - and five of the league’s top nine scorers call Fox Valley Ice Arena home. That includes the top four point producers as Jack Harvey has 24 and Nicholas Moldenhauer (Toronto Maple Leafs), Jayden Perron and Michael Emerson are tied at 19. Harvey also leads the league with 14 goals. It’s been a great start to the season and the Steel continue to prove their ranking at or near the top of the league.

3. Fargo Force / Last Ranking: 2

Record: 9-3-0-2

The only team overshadowing Fargo in the Western Conference is Lincoln. The Force have a four-game point streak, have won three of their past four and are 7-2-0-1 in their last 10.

Nick Oliver’s group has continued to score seemingly at ease, with a conference-leading 58 goals, including 10 from Cole Knuble. Fargo took five of a possible six points last weekend despite playing three road games in three days. Four of those points came via a pair of wins at Omaha. The Force are 6-0-0-1 away from home this season. ...

Former Football Standout Jake Ratzlaff Is Making Hockey Comeback In USHL

Dec 24, 2022
Jordan McAlpine

Jake Ratzlaff never imagined his athletic career would take such a winding path. When asked if his younger self would’ve seen this coming, the answer started with two words.

“No chance. I would’ve said there’s no chance at all it would’ve gone this way,” Ratzlaff said during an interview with FloHockey earlier this week. “Because in my mind, it was I’m going to go to college, I’m going to be a stud and I’m going to play in the NFL. Or I’m going to play hockey and be a stud, and then try to play pro. ..."

(The path he eventually chose) has Ratzlaff back on the ice - a month removed from playing football at the University of Wisconsin and over two years removed from his last competitive hockey game. A three-sport prep star in Minnesota, Ratzlaff is back in the USHL (with the Madison Capitals) as he looks to rejuvenate a hockey career that at one point saw him ranked for the NHL Draft and committed to play for the vaunted University of Minnesota men’s hockey program before choosing football as his primary sport. ...

The 2022-23 USHL regular season is deep into its jockeying-for-playoff-positions phase, and it’s been longer than too long since I’ve posted a USHL standings snapshot. Thankfully since the League finally engaged a professional service to maintain their long-languishing website (thank you, Sidearm Sports), it’s much easier to gather the info for HFB member consumption …

1677703317067.png

1677703279805.png

JMC Notes:
  • Not surprising to see Chicago & Fargo leading their respective conferences, each by a comfortable but not impenetrable margin. Second place Waterloo has been on a roll in the West, as have Youngstown in the East (the latter a minor surprise considering they were dead last in the League standings two seasons ago).
  • USNTDP being in 4th place in the Eastern Conference standings is good news for their program, but keep in mind they are not eligible for a USHL post-season berth. If I understand the League protocol regarding the Team USA participation, their only influences on the final seeding will be what other teams they defeat & lose to and how often.
  • Presuming the 2023 playoffs will be structured like last season, the top 6 teams (minus NTDP) in each Conference at the end of regular season play (April 22nd) will secure post-season spots. So with 8 weeks of play to go, it appears that Madison & Omaha are the only two teams (plus a “maybe” for Muskegon) who can afford to be looking ahead to next season.

2022-23 USHL Power Rankings
Updated 2d ago (3/8/23) by Ryan Sikes

Find out which of the league's 16 teams rise and fall over the course of the log regular season.

...1. Fargo Force / Last Ranking: 1
Record: 33-8-2-3

The Force stay atop this installment of the USHL Power Rankings after taking both games against Omaha last weekend.

Fargo has points in their last 13 games and has gone 8-0-2-0 over its last ten contests.

Bret Link snapped a six-game goal-less streak with the game-winner on Saturday. The addition of Zam Plante gives the team yet another weapon on offense.

2. Chicago Steel / Last Ranking: 2

Record: 31-14-3-1

Five points back of Fargo, Chicago remains second in these rankings.

Macklin Celebrini continues to impress, breaking the USHL’s U17 scoring record with a four-point effort in Sunday’s comeback victory over Madison.

The Steel have points in their last three games and have gone 7-2-1-0 over its last ten.

Just one game on the docket this weekend at home against Cedar Rapids before getting eight days off.

Following yesterday’s game, Macklin Celebrini set a new USHL benchmark for most points by a U17 player previously held by Taylor Cammarata with 69 points (2011-2012). In the contest, Mack registered his 70th and 71st points. #FeelSteel pic.twitter.com/4G61tsj3UD

3. Waterloo Black Hawks / Last Ranking: 3

Record: 30-15-1-0

The Black Hawks saw their three-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday in Sioux City.

However, Waterloo has gone 6-3-1-0 over its last ten games and scored the fourth-most goals (184) in the league.

USHL Spotlight | Chicago's Celebrini on the Path

3/24/2023

On the surface, Mack Celebrini’s path the to Chicago Steel does seem somewhat circuitous.

Born and raised in North Vancouver and one of four athletic kids belonging to Rick and Robyn Celebrini, he got his start skating as a three-year old - typical of most aspiring young hockey players. And as he rose up through the North Shore youth hockey ranks, it appeared that he might have a future in the game. ...

Confidence is a tricky thing. Especially when it comes to sports. It’s difficult to be successful if you don’t have it. And if you do have it, well that can be a different story.

Mark Carlson, who’s in his 23rd season as head coach of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, referenced how confidence has played a role in the play of his defenseman Eric Pohlkamp this year.

“We thought he could take some steps,” said Carlson, who recently surpassed the 750-coaching wins mark. “He’s playing confidently, he’s a competitive player and a strong kid. He’s reliable defensively and he’s a player that has always shot the puck well. He’s done the work in the weight room and we were pretty positive about the steps he could take in his second year with us.” ...
