This really makes the Killorn deal look extra horrific though (even though it also makes it easier to afford). Even by the worst assessment of TJ, he's easily a 1m better player than Killorn. Probably more.

I love Johnny but 7 years? Ouch. And he hasn't been Tyjo in 3 years. I feel like we are paying him off of one career year 3 seasons ago. He needs to have a strong 2017-18 and earn it.

He's a very key player for us this year. If we get 2015 Johnson I feel very good about our chances.

Called it! Congrats to TJ. Good AAV. Term, meh, but it was expected because of Killorn.

If we were paying him for 2015, it would have cost a lot more.

I have a Tyjo jersey so I am a huge huge fan. I just hope he returns to the old Tyjo is all.

I think all we really need from him is to be a 50-55 point 2C. Anything better is a big time bonus.

He did have his best season directly after signing his last contract though, so maybe we can expect a little bump from the financial security. Seems like that happens more these days than in the past. In the old days, players regularly had huge seasons in their contract years, and then suddenly fade off. These days it seems to be the exact opposite.

I like it. Good deal.

Yzerman locking up Stammer, Hedman, Killorn, and Johnson for the long term

Strong playoff performances don't hurt.

Yzerman has shown some creativity and a knack for getting out of contracts near the end of their term. Wouldn't be surprised if by 2022 we are minus both Killorn and Johnson. That's why I'm ok with the extra term if it keeps the AAV down. Also happy that it's a limited NTC down the road. Seems that is Yzerman showing his cards a bit.

Also just $8.5m in real dollars over the last two years, which could make the contract a little easier to move at that time. If a budget team like, for instance, Ottawa, is in the playoff hunt, the $1.5m savings in real dollars could be a selling point.

As said, AAV is nice but a year or two less would've been better. But it's not horrible. Expect Palat to get the same or 0,5-1 more.

Why would Palat get more? Guy only produces from Feb-April. He's gone from Oct-Jan and May-June.

TyJo is a favourite player of mine, so love this deal! Sure term is a bit long given injury concerns but with shorter term the AAV would been higher so seems fair :handclap:

While I might like Palat more, I rather give Johnson 7 years than Palat. Palat probably gets term too though.

Even with Palat taking half the year off they have almost identical numbers. Palat has the higher regular season ppg while Johnson the playoffs, combined Palat is at 0.70 and Johnson 0.71. Palat is the better two way player but Johnson is a center which usually is worth more.

I can see Palat getting like 7 x 4.85 which is 34 total. Just 1 million less than what Johnson got. Which would be crazy considering he produces at around 20 more points a year than Killorn, while being a better all around forward yet would get just 400k more a year. Killorn put that Harvard education to use on his contract negotiations.

As long as it's not loaded to death with trade/movement clauses. They're nice for the player and hell for the team. Oh yeah I wanna play my hometown team. Hometown team offers two shiny pennies for your dime.

Screw that
