RELEASE: Oilers set to open 2018 training camp and pre-season

SATURDAY IS AN OPEN PRACTICE FREE FOR FANS

he Oilers will host a Fan Day on Saturday, September 15, which will feature an open Oilers scrimmage beginning at 10:30am. Doors open at 10am for this FREE event, and will include several family-friendly activities to keep fans of all ages entertained, including testing your hockey skills in the Hockey Zone, meeting the Oilers mascot Hunter in the Kids Zone, and viewing Oilers artifacts on display. Fans will also have the opportunity to purchase game-worn jerseys from various eras in Oilers history, in addition to Oilers new and game-used equipment at a Mini Locker Room Sale. The Oilers Alumni and Hall of Fame Members Grant Fuhr and Glenn Anderson will also make a special appearance to meet fans and sign autographs.

Did you notice the roster has on the last page the players that are not coming to camp (ie. College players and Europeans that the Oilers hold rights to) Everyone is on the list byt Vincent Desharnais is not on the list. Does anyone know why? He has so much promise. He is a workhorse for Providence.​

Interesting. I hope it's just an oversight. He was at the summer rookie camp and he's still listed on the website in the "in the system" page.

I agree, I think he has some promise as a bottom pairing, smart, physical, stay at home guy.

True but the other Uni guys who are committed are listed as guys who are Oilers property but not attending camp. Which is why I think it was a complete oversight or mistake. Doesn't really matter either way imo

I think our defense to start the season will be

Klefbom - Larsson
Russell - Benning
Jones - Bouchard
Jerebek + Gravel

And then game 10

Klefbom - Larsson
Nurse - Benning
Russell - Jerebek
Gravel

Does Russel end up on the right side again? do they try nurse or klef there instead?
If neither of these are true, does that mean Bear and Bouchard are competing for the 6th spot?
Jones, Garrison, Jarabek competing for the 7th D spot (Jones likely not since they'll want him to play minutes)

If we didn't need both Brodziak and Upshall so badly to kill penalties i would say our best chance of success is to roll with 7 dressed D to spread out the minutes, and have a pp specialist. (they could just go 4 F on the PP too)

I like the LW competitions

Aberg, Caguilla, Benson, Khaira, Upshall competing for 2 spots, and likely a spare forward spot.
I doubt Benson makes it out of camp since it's 3rd line LW or minors for him.

We need some serious progression from klefbom, nurse to at least he as good as last year, Benning to do a full 180 and Russel and Larsson to be better than last year othrrwise... Dear god that may be the worst d group I've ever seen.

I should have specified going into the season. Last year wasn't expected to be that bad because klefbom and Larsson were expected to progress on an amazing season the year prior at least giving us an elite top pair.

This year however if we're going in without nurse, based on last year's performance

Klef played like a bottom pairing dman
Larsson played like a 3/4
Russel played like a 5/6
Benning played like a 6/7

And everyone else is a question mark.

I truly do hope that Jesse is not lined up with Caggiula. McLellan already confirmed that Jesse will be playing with Strome.

I guess it is fair though that Nuge, McDavid and Rattie are having another go as McLellan confirmed...

That would be my guess. Maybe Kahira is a stretch on 3rd LW but I think he could handle it. Not sure who'll slide in next to Bouchard. Jerebek/Jones/Lagesson... Right now Jones is the guy imo, but we'll get a much better picture when they don't play rookies anymore.
