Habs fake trade mantra -- the eternal triumph of quantity over quality.

I'd like bergevin to try to get Paul Gaustad: big centre, great on faceoffs, sound defensively. With Moen and Prust, he would be awesome.

Trading Beaulieu, Fucale and a 1st round draft pick is a mistake and goes against what Bergevin wants to do.

I think we need to part ways with:

Gorges
Diaz
Bourque
Gionta
Desharnais
Moen
Leblanc

Build around:

Pacioretty - Galchenyuk - Gallagher
XXXXX - Eller - Collberg
Prust - Plekanec - Bournival
XXXX - De La Rose - XXXXX

Markov - Emelin
Subban - Tinordi
Beaulieu - Ellis/Pateryn

On that list, only Gorges has any value. Diaz would have a little I suppose if he wasn't a UFA. No one want's Bourque. Inconsistent, bad rep for laziness, injury prone. Gio is also a UFA and he wouldn't bring much back in return.

I see him thrown in to a lot (if not most) trade proposals on this board.

Honestly I think he's got a spot on the team in a year or two, and will be an important player for the club.

Curious if there were any trade McDonagh proposals when he was with us...

I believe there was only one back in 2009. Former board user named PG_Ghost started this rumour:

McDonagh + Higgins + Janik + Valentenko

for

Scott Gomez + Tom Pyatt + Busto

No one took it seriously.

While Brière's sitting can be justified by the more physical team the Habs are facing tonight, still puzzles me how the habitual rumor-mongerers who produce fake trades at prodigious rates, have not yet concocted a scenario where Brière is eating hot dogs on account of some other reason.

3.25 mil for a #4 center? I wouldn't take him even if he was free. Makes Desharnais' contract look like Pacioretty's.

I know, I know...his "bigness" would instantly win us 10 more games a year.

I agree, I'm sure a whole lot of teams would love to have him...and the Habs are not too keen on moving him, even with his off ice troubles.

He's a guy that has a better than average shot at being a top 4 calibre guy on a contender. His size, skating and hockey sense are things you can't teach. His strength and defensive coverage is something you can teach and maturity can be acquired as one ages.

Briere doesn't strike me as a hot dog eater, more a salad with a chicken breast and iced tea.

Yes, it would help. Look at the team now. I can almost assure you that this small staffed team will finish the season very badly - like last season - and won't last one Series. + Gaustad is a much needed face off man and the type of players you need at the end of periods and games.

Not at a 3.25 mil cap hit...pass.

I doubt Gaustad would magically turn Gionta DD Briere and Gallagher into giants by playing 12 minutes a game, get real.

We need to improve our top end talent and make room on our bottom two lines for promotions and big players. Three lines of small, talented players obviously doesn't work.

Pacioretty-Galchenyuk-Gallagher
XXXXX-Plekanec-XXXXX
Bournival-Eller-XXXXX
Moen-XXXXX-Prust

(Bourque, Desharnais, Briere, White, Gionta, Parros) = ~17.5mil

- I think we're stuck with Briere so I'll keep him in the lineup = 4mil
- I'd like a big, responsible winger with decent offensive ability for our bottom-6 = ~3.25mil
- I think we need a good two-way centre on our 4th line, not a defensive specialist. =~1.5mil
- We desperately need another goalscoring winger for our top lines. Size would be beneficial but not mandatory IMO due to the restructuring of our bottom lines. =~8mil

Top-6 winger: Cammalleri, Vanek, Michalek, Moulson, Hemsky, Callahan (UFA, too expensive to acquire through trade)
Bottom-6 winger: King, Paajarvi / N.Kulemin, D.Moss, D.Penner, D.Winnik - UFA
Bottom-6 C: B.Boyle, M.Lapierre, M.Goc

So with this restructuring, the roster would ideally look like:

Pacioretty-Galchenyuk-Gallagher
Vanek-Plekanec-Briere
Bournival-Eller-King
Moen-Boyle-Prust
(Leblanc, Thomas)

Markov-Subban
Emelin-Gorges
Tinordi-Pateryn
(Drewiske, Beaulieu)

It's cap compliant. Looks good?

This lineup is no better than today's. Not sure what the obsession is with Vanek. He will not be worth the contract he receives. Let someone else make the mistake. I would keep White over Boyle. Buyout Briere. Callahan would be fantastic and Moulson / King okay. You have most of the guys we need to get rid of correct.

I wouldn't move Markov, Subban, Price, Pacioretty, Eller, Plekanec, Gallagher, Galchenyuk.

Everyone else is tradeable.
